I think that people underestimate the important of ease of use as you get older, when time becomes more valuable than money and tinkering.
All these people talking about Unraid setups, custom boxes that use a ton of power, loud fans in a big chassis, etc. just doesn't really appeal to me. This stuff needs to pass the WAF.
I work on enterprise IT architecture every day. I definitely have the skills to do this and have in the past. But I have a wife and kids and a home to maintain, and honestly, Synology does it well, and I don't want to waste my time.
Yes blade servers are loud, but desktop servers are near silent. something like a xeon z840, you can run all your home computing needs from one machine. and its near silent because of the cooling system it has.
I just got a Dell Precision 5820 for $254 from Dell Refurbished…. A couple case fan replacements, TrueNAS (free) or Unraid (minor fee), and good to go. I've had a 412+ running for 10+ years, but at the end of the day they are just so overpriced if you just want to put a little effort in.
Don't know why someone down voted you, as you are actually correct. id choose a hp Z840 or something myself but the execution is still the same.

create all the VM's you need.
But the synology products have their market... so the price premium is worth it.
depends on the size HDD you need, however you really don't start seeing the true NAS benefits until you add at least 2
I am planning to buy 923+ and lets say I am going with 10 tb+ (what ever is cheaper). I am planning to go with 2 as you suggested. If I go with SSD then I will go 2-4 tb per bay. We can use SSD in any of 4 bay right?
It usually goes on sale once a year. For example the last it went on sale was Feb 23, 2023. It was I believe $835 at adorama + some PayPal promotion. And then we also had a western digital promotion for the Gold drives 16TB for $250. I loaded up 4 of the Gold drives and this server for about $2K and then remaining 4 16TB are red drives. All in all satisfied with the storage and performance. Pretty solid setup.

Yea you can use 4tb SSD in the bays, u might need a adapter though, to convert 2.5 to 3.5. So if you do it that way you're prob looking at a additional 3-4 hundred. my question here is why would you need SSD's in a nas? you doing super high bandwidth stuff? plan on multiple virtual machines? Plex server?
remember its only a 2 core machine..
if its just for file transfer speed, theres a nvme slot on the bottom to be used for cache. and NVME is wayyyyy faster than a sata SSD

No I don't need high band width, transcoding. Just a simple backup for home for family of four. I am not planning to run server or plex either. I don't know, I just thought ssd is better. So thought of going with that. Why do you need nvme slot for cache?
not sure what the servers others are recommending use, but I know the DS220+ uses 4.5 watts when disks are asleep. that's hard to beat for something that (no matter how you use it) is idle more than it's working.

the NVME comes in to play when you writing large files, it will write them to the cache first and then to the drives, pretty much getting them on the machine faster. Also it would help in video playback. One thing to consider about SSD is they can only be erased / written over so many times before you have to replace them. So in a heave Input / output case it isn't ideal. cavet to this is enterprise ssd's they have way more cycles than consumer.
I don't know how tech savy you are, but I run synology in a vm with 4 drives dedicated to it and it does everything I need.
I've had trouble with a 2 year old mini HP desktop transcoding 4k high bitrate home GoPro video via Plex to my TV. It keeps buffering so I had to switch the content to a Plex server instance running on my MacBook and that ran fine so it was apparently the processor.
All that to ask....will the 220 nas prevent me from streaming high res content?

It's a dual core processor… 4K will be iffy I'd think
