not sure what the servers others are recommending use, but I know the DS220+ uses 4.5 watts when disks are asleep. that's hard to beat for something that (no matter how you use it) is idle more than it's working.
Very good point. I would have five 16tb drives and only use them when I get back from home to watch movies. So the majority of the time they would be asleep. Still...the prices Frown

True, it's definitely on a case by case basis on my server I have 4 12tb drives and

Run synology
Plex
Windows
Linux
Windows for my security cameras
And next cloud for backup. I've never ran a power draw check on it, but it's a Xeon and they not built for low power draw, but I gues u could swap for the L versions that are low power lol. But I'd figure cheaper than separate machines

I just got a Dell Precision 5820 for $254 from Dell Refurbished…. A couple case fan replacements, TrueNAS (free) or Unraid (minor fee), and good to go. I've had a 412+ running for 10+ years, but at the end of the day they are just so overpriced if you just want to put a little effort in.
Does TrueNAS have an easy and secure way to share files/folders with clients?
That's one of my hold-ups to not building my own.

Guessing they're trying to clear out the 220+ to make room for the 224+
wait for the 224+ or jump on the 220+? not really in any hurry.

FTP?? really depends how you want to share files.

FTP Server - Project - Scopes - Client Scope (lock client company login to this folder)

most ftp servers can be accessed with just a ip address or url. and it looks like a shared folder on their side

How does Amazon typically respond to B&H Photo Video deals?

Can I count on a price adjustment?
Amazon doesn't have ds220+ in stock. If you place order now, have to wait til August to receive one🤣

Yes, but I can also order Used - Acceptable for $237 or Used - Good for $275 with delivery on Friday, and send it back when I receive new one between Jul 31 - Aug 4.

I bought a used acceptable one from Amazon warehouse and it came almost like brand new condition. Ran memory test on it without any issue, it has been up and running with 14TB x 2 for over a month without problem, gl all.

Short answer is no. You would have to use a 3rd party solution like FileCloud or NextCloud. You still have to figure out on your own the security part of it and how to make those services available to the internet in a secure way on your own. Is not as easy as using QuickConnect and File Station or Synology Drive. FileCloud has a free and a paid version. NextCloud is free and I think open source.

Those 2 alternatives are not hard to setup but to be honest they are not as easy or convenient as Synology's solution. If you are already running a Synology and money is not a concern I would say stay with that solution, ie get another Synology NAS. If something breaks you can just call Synology support and they will fix it. For NextCloud and FileCloud free versions you are on your own if something breaks. Also, if there is a security vulnerability that impacts your business Synology might be liable and you could get some money through a legal process if you are willing to go that route. With NextCloud and FileCloud free versions you are liable if there is a vulnerability that gets exploited as those free softwares are provided "as is" without any warranties.

In summary, as everything in life there are tradeoffs to consider. All 3 solutions are good but you have to decide which one is more convenient for you.
