In general, both sound fantastic. The Sony's will sound "better". Noise cancellation works very well on either. The difference to me, was the comfort. The Bose will feel "better". I have a bigger head and even the Bose 700 were too tight. Then there's all the controls either on the ear cup and/or within the app that you can decide, however none of that matters, to me at least, if they're not comfy. Which is why it's an easy win for the Bose.

A quick note on these in case anyone digs this far into the thread:

I returned my pair recently because the noise canceling cannot be turned off. It has two modes -- full noise canceling and "aware" mode which is supposed to let outside sound in, but there's no way to simply turn off noise canceling.

Which is wild because there are a million situations where noise canceling doesn't work very well, so at best it's draining your batteries. At worst it is amplifying random wind noise or dishes clanging or whatever. I don't want to hear that shit twice because I can't turn off your stupid noise canceling feature.

I love my QC35's (which I got at this price) and use them all the time. From what I've read, there's not a compelling reason to upgrade to from the 35's to the 45's.

My current Sony XM3 noise cancellation isn't working on the left (constant cracking noise). Although I love the noise cancellation feature of the XM3, it did not last for the full 3 years of daily use (I used it 10-12 hours a day).

Anyone who has used XM3 or XM4 compares noise cancellation with Q45. I am planning to buy from Costco (not a prime member and no amex target 40% off deal).

what's the difference between QC45 and SE? just rebranded for Costco?

Found it:

The main difference is that the SE version is cheaper because it comes with a soft case rather than the hard, leather case you get with the 45s. F
Correct, SE is a Costco branding thing and also it comes with a soft cover. I had this model and the soft cover is not as terrible as mentioned in some reviews.

Yeah, that is pretty stupid on Bose's part! One would thin ka simple firmware update would make it possible for the button to be a 3-way toggle (NC On, Aware Mode, NC Off) just like on the QC35s.

I am fortunate that it is not an issue for me as 90% of my usage on these is while flying and if I'm on aircraft that still has air gaspers (the directional air vents) I just maneuver them so as to not hit the mics on my cans. But yeah, I cannot even imagine how irritating it would be to go for a walk with these on during a windy day right?

That's right, the QC45s include a 2.5mm to 3.5mm audio cable that plugs from one ear cup into a regular headphone port. This will allow them to work on aircraft. While the QC45s no longer come with the dual-prong "airline adapters", there are not many aircraft in passenger service still that have these plugs. The QC35s had the adapter and at one point I threw it away as I never thought Id use it... and then I took a 14 hour trans-pacific Japan Airlines flight and sure as all hell that sucker had the two hole jacks in the sea tbacks! Oh well, you can still plug in and listen to movies in mono.. I just used my laptop lol.

Note of interest: Several airlines have already announced that they are including ad-hoc bluetooth pairing in future versions of their in-flight entertainment suites. So someday we may all be able to use our bluetooth headphones and earbuds with aircraft movies and TV shows... Though you can always purchase a cheap bluetooth adapter that plugs into the headphone jack in the seat and pairs to your headphones/earbuds if you prefer too! And most US carriers are also offering the same (or more) content for free on your own personal device (phone, tablet, laptop, etc.) by connecting to the onboard wifi system. Never have there been more options for entertainment!

I got mine because I am finally 100% ditching anything with MicroUSB still that I absolutely can do away with or upgrade. My OCD has got the better of me, but I got USB-C cables and chargers coming outta everywhere now in my home and travel bags! Come on iPhone 15, daddy needs to get rid of that Lightning jack! Ah damn, they're gonna soak me for AirPods Pro at some point now lol (Oh never mind, MagSafe!).

But yeah, I'd say the sound is improved a bit on the high end and the battery life is definitely a bit longer... However I believe the cost to build a pair of QC35s was higher as the new ones feel a little bit "cheaper" in quality to me. Worth it for my USB-C OCD I suppose haha. If you're more tolerant and your QC35s are still humming along, probably not a huge need to upgrade though honestly.

My wife does not like noise-cancelling cans and is still perfectly happy with her OE2s (which I think are almost 10 years old at this point?). The damn things still hold a good charge and I just replaced the ear cushions for the first time recently. They look pristine and she is happy so win-win haha. I give it to Bose, they build a quality of product that will long outlast my own obsession with upgrading!

I'm with you right here. I have the sound link which I love. But I now carry three types of cable, lighting USBC and microUSB. I can't wait to completely transition to USBC. Btw it's not that I don't like carrying cables I mean they don't weight much at all. Is that fact that if you forget them you are out of luck with charging them.

Yes. Going for a walk outside is a great time for me to enjoy my bluetooth headphones, and a gust of wind into the exterior mic is extremely annoying while wearing qc45s.

You would think that they'd deliver a firmware update to allow you to disable noise canceling, but... I wouldn't count on it. Just go with a different set of headphones if that's important to you.

Oh man that sucks! I recall thinking about this my first flight with the 45s on... I usually throw the buds in for a walk so lucky it doesn't cause mea problem. I don't get why Bose would not (and still has not) fixed this. I mean what reason would they design them differently like that right?

That is abolsutely right! I went all in two years ago converting everything I could to USB-C. My travel bags all went USB-C (Well and lightning for Apple stuff, but all lightning to USB-C cables at least now). Even got a USB-C capable battery bank (still has USB-A ports just in case).

Ya know what gets me sometimes? Flipping rental cars and their USB-A ports when trying to use Apple CarPlay on the road haha. So have bought the old USB-A to Lightning cables twice since then because I didn't bring one in my bag! Then before the trip that I am on right now I consciously remembered and put a USB-A cable in my backpack for the rental car. Get to Mobile, AL and get into the 2022 Chevy Malibu... Freaking thing has TWO USB-C Ports on it haha. I was honestly blown away lol.
