Do these have hard drive brand restrictions?
No these do not. I use 3rd party RAM in my DS923 and I do get a warning in DSM but its been rock solid since day 1.

Noob here - How do you use 5 slots? I always imagined these would be in even number slots.

Which hard drives would be for backup/duplicating and which ones would be originals?

The RAM is really cheap to add so it depends how much the extra bay is worth to you. The 1522+ has some extra ports too but both use the Ryzen R1600.

in the past i have seen people say these do not work well as a Plex servers. is that statement still true?
these ones do not have an iGPU (the synology ones with intel chipset do). So it depends how many people are going to be accessing it and whether you need transcoding. If it's just a family of 3 using standard file formats without transcoding, you're gonna be fine

you can look at a comparison of 923 vs 920 on nascompares for more info

Why would I buy this over building a TrueNas system? I can get a more powerful CPU, more memory, motherboard, a case and a PSU for about the same price.

Is it worth changing from a QNAP TS-453Be to the Synology DS923+? My QNAP is chugging along for 5 years now. The biggest issue with it is that it just never goes to sleep. Keeps on making noises and spinning the disks all day 24/7. It thought it was because I was using a Docker container (for an ebook server; the excellent Calibre-Web). But it behaves the same even when the docker is off. I tried everything. Even deleted everything and started from scratch once. Pored over it on forums multiple times over the years. The consensus seems to be QNAP just could never figure out sleep perfectly. There doesn't seem to be any problem with it otherwise; it's just irritating. My other old Synology 220j sleeps idly and wakes up only when I need a file from it. Just the way it should be. But then it doesn't have any Plex or docker station being used.

The biggest concern I have in moving to DS923+ is that my QNAP does have hardware transcoding, while the Synology does not. That being said, I've moved onto a client side decoding option (Infuse for Mac/iOS), since it works better than any transcoding, so I won't miss it much. But it was good to have if I ever needed it. The other concern with DS923+ is that reviews say it's loud and has high power consumption (and thus heat). Not sure if that is something to worry about too much. If it goes to sleep fine, it may not be a problem. But if it turns out it behaves the same as my current QNAP, I'll rather keep my $500.

Use case wise, by QNAP works just fine, so there is no need to upgrade. I use it for syncing backups, the ebook server and multimedia (used to use Plex but moved onto Infuse to side-step transcoding; still use Plex for library management since I have the lifetime license anyway, but it's connected to Infuse so Plex is being used as a dummy server without transcoding). The one and only problem I have is the constant noise.

Any opinions or advice would be helpful.
I had a TS-453Be and recently upgraded to a TS-464. I looked at various comparison videos between the TS-464 and the DS923+ and decided on another QNAP. I did the upgrade because I am running quite a few containers and would like to have the additional processing power of the TS-464. Just for pure NAS use along with a few of their apps, the TS-453Be is quite capable and remains a popular choice in the used market - I was able to sell mine very quickly for about $300. If you don't have a specific reason to upgrade, I would just stick with that.

The reason I didn't get the DS923+ is that Synology seems to want to play the game of requiring their own proprietary hardware for upgrades, which are very expensive. Some of it, like RAM, will work with nagging, but others, like NVMe drives, will simply not work for storage. It also seems that QNAP has some better proprietary apps like AI-powered media management, which is very useful to me for managing family photos and videos gathered over the years. Another small factor is that I am already familiar with QNAP software and how the system behaves.

One difference that people seem to argue back and forth over is of course the Intel vs AMD CPU. IMO, most of the discussion seems to be around whether the AMD is as capable as the Intel, rather than the reverse. So the default seems to favor Intel.

All that said, this is a great price for a great NAS. Anyone looking for a capable 4-bay NAS should jump on this deal.

No, all 7 of my drives are unsupported. They only recommend drives they've personally tested to prevent legal issues.

I built my own NAS about 12 years ago. I switched to a QNAP about 4 years ago. I run multiple micro form factor PCs with Proxmox VMs for a variety of purposes. All this is to say that I don't shy away from building my own.

The reason I like a QNAP/Synology solution is that they do a better job of abstracting the underlying technology into a smaller set of configurations. NAS is a specific type of application that doesn't require powerful CPUs or a ton of RAM to run well at very high-performance levels. So with something like a Synology, you get the benefit of streamlined configuration, predictable/stable performance, and a rich set of management/access/security/backup/sync/notification features that would take very complicated configuration to replicate. TrueNAS makes this easier, but it's not as easy as Synology/QNAP. For those that want to ticker with their NAS, they can try building a TrueNAS system. For me, my NAS holds important files that I just want to be available so I'm not tinkering with it. I do my tinkering with the Proxmox VMs.

Lastly, want to mention that my self-built NAS pulled about 80 watts on idle and that was quite an achievement with under-volting an AMD processor. The QNAP I have now run about 20-40 watts depending on load. For the 8 years I ran my self-built NAS, that's 2800kWh of additional electricity used, or about $420 at 15 cents a kWh. Your mileage may vary, but a Synology/QNAP will have lower energy costs over the years.

This or the 423+ that I got for $369?
Don't need hardware transcoding.
Is it worth the extra $100 to be more future proof?
If you don't need transcoding, then I would 100% recommend the 923+.

I bought the 920+ earlier this year purely because of the transcoding. I primarily use it as a backup for my family laptops and as a Jellyfin server with ARR apps.

However, if you have a streaming stick, they can usually decode the most popular formats out there ie HEVC, Av1, h264, and you can be worry free that you don't need transcoding, and can go for the 923+.

Still true, AMD CPUs and GPUs are garbage for plex transcoding, and Plex still doesnt even officially support AMD products. So you need to look for Intel based NAS' or build one yourself with an Nvidia GPU.

Just want to point out. The 923+ supports using the m.2 slots as storage pools natively: https://www.storagereview.com/new...port-added

And there is a method to do it on other models, which has favorable feedback but YMMV as it's technically unsupported still as far as I know: https://www.reddit.com/r/synology...to_use_as/

Depending on your model, you'd probably want to upgrade to the 10GBe card to take advantage of it, though, possibly more ram as well.

Edit: looks like it's even more models, per https://kb.synology.com/en-us/DSM...orage_pool

423+ for $369 was a price mistake and a steal. You should keep it, but anyone that didn't get it shouldn't let their opinion be swayed by this, it was a mistake and is unlikely to recur. They priced it like the 423 which is $369 normally.

This is a great deal. In for 1.
