Although the $250 iPad is a far better value, what may be considered a deal breaker is the puny 3GB of RAM (the base storage sucks too, but that's the Apple tax for you). Although not a problem today, the low amount of main memory could be a limiting factor in just a couple years.
$380 is a good price but it's a bit early to be buying for Christmas (you'd essentially be eating 180 days of the product warranty). I thought this is the best price it's ever been at; but $350 at Costco would be a great deal. At that price, I'd pay the extra $100 to be more future-proof.
Until this reaches around $320 it's not going to be worth it.
