Not to sound like a hater, but how is this relevant to this deal. An average Joe would not buy these headphones for someone who breaks them often anyway.

Actually got the cheapo 599 deal on adorama for the $69 and bought an adapter to 3.5 mm from Amazon and sent it to my dad. He's broken so many headphones. I'm just not going to send him a $400 headphones set.
I sent him a $400 headphone sent in the past... It didn't go well
30% off is great for a relatively new product

Yup it's a good deal for a very good headphone. I have the HD660S2 and think it's definitely worth it at $400. Not overpriced at all. Original MSRP was overpriced imo.

Can the "high impedance headphone jack" on my M1 MacBook Pro drive these or do I have to have an external DAC / Amp?

I recommend buying a dongle DAC/amp for this headphone. I own the 660S2 but not the M1, so I can only tell you that this headphone needs a decent amount of power to sound its best. It's not super power hungry but does need some juice to drive it properly.

I'm currently using the Cayin RU6 to power the 660S2 but you can use good, cheaper dongles like FiiO KA5, iBasso DC04 Pro, or HiBy FC4. DC04 Pro and FC4 are both on sale right now with Amazon Prime.

I have this and the 560S and I prefer the 560S. This is really overpriced for what you get.

It's just that this price has been historically the common sale price and it's on sale often. I'm just letting other people know that are looking for something that's actually very well rated at a significantly lower price is available from the same company. There are plenty of places to look for ratings, but I think most of us know where to look

I am so tempted by this deal, this would pair perfectly with my Darkvoice tube amplifier.

You said "it's just that" like you were explaining your original post but then used a completely different line of reasoning lol. I think the guy was trying to say that no one cares about your particular application of sending it to your accident prone dad which I agree with. Anyone spending nearly 4 bills on a set of headphones knows what they're for and what they're getting into and it's never a present for pops who doesn't know the difference.

Seconding this. MSRP made it hard to swallow over the 600's and 650's used/sale prices, but IMO it is better. That said, whether those incremental improvements are worth the premium will depend on the person.

I think the 660s2 has the best "technicalities" (i.e., details, staging, dynamics, etc.) of the 600 series, although maybe has the least prominent famous tone/timbre.

Would happily buy this at this price to replace my 660s.

Edit: Lot of people would probably disagree, but the whole 600 series do seem to benefit when paired with the right amp. Would not recommend these if you don't have an amp or intend on getting a decent one in the near future.

I still think these are too much. Hard to justify them when I got my 660s originals for $180. I have heard them and to me they are better, but not enough to make me have to upgrade. I still think the HD58X when it hits $130 or so is still the best deal around if bang for your buck is the main goal.

Anybody compare to hifiman he1000 stealth? I'm thinking buy once cry once though. On one hand my ears are shit because all the mid price ones sound the same(beats and xm4 sound the exact same and beats are hated while xm4 are loved) to me so spending 1300 will probably be pointless for me but on the other hand I'll always have it in the back of my mind that there's a possibility I'm missing out on beautiful sound

I need to go back to over the ears for the comfort and quick on/off.

I have some ~$30 chineasium IEMs (Linsoul Kiwi Ears Cadenza), that amped and eq'd with a $110 Qudelix 5K that to my ears sounded sonically the same as the balance cable amped $300 planar Sundaras that I returned after a lengthy A/B comparison.

However the IEMs don't fit 100% great in my ears (yes, I've fiddled with many different tips) and they're a pain using at work when I need to impromptu have a conversation when a co-worker comes over.
