I would add there isn't a big enough difference from the 820 vs 420 for projectors especially when you consider the price.

Hopefully not too stupid of a question, but what's the difference in playing a disc on this vs a PS5? I just bought a 77" C2 OLED and am excited to use it, but wondering if adding this is necessary or there's not a huge difference

I have an unopened br player worth thousands and I keep not being able to sell it because no current br players have a zoom feature, which I like, due to my vision sucking. So I keep the unopened player as a backup for when my current one stops working. I wish manufacturers hadn't stopped putting zoom in. But still tempting to buy this and then sell the other and come out well over $1k ahead.

This supports DolbyVision HDR (and all common HDR formats), so depending on what HDR formats your TV supports you'll probably get much better handling of images with a mix of bright and dark areas using this player. This is why I bought this unit previously, and it's definitely worth it.

PS5 main function is to play PS5 games. Its Blu ray playback, while functional, is an afterthought. The 820's main function is to play 4k discs the best they can be played. Is the difference noticeable? Yes, to the discerning eye. You have to decide if having the best is important to you. This is the case with pretty much every electronics device

Not a stupid question, with HDR formats being supported differently across devices. In the case of the PS5, it doesn't support Dolby Vision HDR (like the 820) while your C2 does. The dedicated player also has more options available to tweak the picture and whatnot.

But do you need a dedicated player that costs another $400 when you already own the PS5? Probably not, unless you're an enthusiast.

Let me tell you about the time machine you can use to go get this for $349.

$399 is a good price to those that know what they want. It's rarely ever lower than this. Even having a console on the same TV I enjoy having this for my dedicated 4k player. The separate audio out option is convenient depending on your setup.

Deals like this are completely subjective. $400 on this vs. a virtual pinball machine vs. Taylor Swift tickets vs. a PS5 sure look like a deal to some people while being a waste of money to others.

If you want Dolby Vision and HD10+ then this is the player that you want. There are definitely better players than this but they will set you back $1K minimum.

If you don't need/don't have a TV capable of Dolby Vision then the UB420 or PS5/Series X would be fine for most people.

Some of the cheaper Sony ones will do Dolby Vision but from researching AV forums, they tend to break easily and don't have nearly as good of tone mapping as the Panasonic.
