Been watching this receiver for awhile waiting for it to hit $400 again @Costco (because of their amazing return policy). Thankfully it became available for even less. Not sure if the prices are the same IN Store.

I've have both this and the Denon S760h.

After owning the S760h for a month or so, it started glitching out really bad and refused to output any audio 70% of the time. I returned it and got the 6050 instead, and have had no issues.
I've had both - the Denon s760h and the Onkyo. I returned the Denon and bought the Onkyo. The Onkyo is much better. It's definitely a step up in both feature set and sound quality. Both have pros and cons. But biggest issue is that the Denon feels underpowered in comparison. It can still reach volumes that are loud enough and you won't ever hit its max. But you can tell you are using it at the upper end of its output power range. The Onkyo sounds clearer to my ears. Plus it's more stable. And feature set is more robust.
not sure if they are pops or clicks, but as speakers drop below the 6ohm rating the receiver will click, this can be fixed by going into speaker settings and setting speaker Ohm rating to 4. There's no (apparent) negative as power usage didn't change, and it got rid of the clicks on my device.

Paid 299 for my nr-656 about 3 years ago. I'm happy with it but this is only 50 bucks more.... It's it worth the upgrade?

I run a 7.1 Atmos set up with Sony speakers but transitioning to Klipsch starting with the rp-450c.
Audio (and really video) is incredible subjective so only you can say if it's worth the upgrade. What is worth noting is you can send it back if you don't like it during the first 90 days. But having said that, unless you *need* HDMI 2.1 (or HDR10+/Airplay 2) this is actually a downgrade in terms of quoted power (90w vs 100w at the same 2 channel 8 ohm driven quote) and features the same sound modes. So you should put that $50 towards a future TV/projector (or speakers.) The 656 was an excellent deal and should serve you until you need 2.1/8k support or upgrade your speakers to something that needs more power / an external amp (klipsch largely would be fine with the 656 IMHO.)

Bought this receiver about a year ago. I cannot recommend as it has had an issue where after using it for a few days the OSD becomes unaccessible, giving a 'please wait...' text that never finishes and I have to reset the AVR for the error to go away (just turning it off/on doesn't fix the problem). Error is most common when using the Apple TV device but also occurs with the Google Chromecast device.
Make sure you update the firmware as I did have that happen briefly but as of the most recent firmware I've not experienced that problem. If you're at the latest firmware: As a least amount of effort solution it might be worth adding a voice controlled outlet when you see another cheap deal on here as being able to say, turn off receiver, turn on receiver to your google device beats the hell out of climbing around the AV equipment Wink Good luck!

I'm guessing you meant a 5.1.2 Atmos set up since 7.1 isn't one.

TBH you should only get another receiver because of feature(s) you need (or failure of course).
Especially if you're happy with the current one.

If it's worth it is a question only you can answer.

Keep in mind you are not trading in and getting full value, you have to pay another $350 to get it.

What is the Costco return window on receivers? 90 days?

There is no 90 day return window for AVR's at Costco. You can return it next year for a full refund.

TV's, computers and some other items have a 90 day return window.

Here is Costco's return policy. AVR's are not on this list.

Quote :
On Merchandise: We guarantee your satisfaction on every product we sell, and will refund your purchase price*, with the following exceptions:

Electronics: Costco will accept returns within 90 days (from the date the member received the merchandise) for Televisions, Projectors, Major Appliances (refrigerators above 10 cu. ft., freezers, ranges, cooktops, over-the-range microwaves, range hoods, dishwashers, water heaters, washers and dryers), Computers, Touchscreen Tablets, Smart Watches, Cameras, Aerial Cameras (drones), Camcorders, MP3 players and Cellular Phones (return details will vary by carrier service contract).

Some store has it for 300.

A cancelation membership letter could follow after returning an used one after 1 year without a valid reason.

Really? They cancel memberships if they suspect abuse or manipulation of the return policy?

Of course if it is excessive and abusive. But if you barely had any returns in the past 3 years, I am sure you will be fine. Costco is still very generous about returning merchandise.

People returned the Yamaha TSR-700 after a year because the firmware updates didn't resolve all the glitchy issues and HDMI problems. Lots of comments about that on Slickdeals threads.

I returned mine after a month because I got so frustrated with it. Too buggy to be patient with it. Ended up with a Denon s750 instead which has worked beautifully for me.

Remember the woman who returned a Christmas tree to Costco in January because it died?

Second the firmware update recommendation.

Had an issue where my zone 2 volume couldn't be controlled until I updated the firmware.

yes, as well as they should. this increases the cost for everyone. it will depend on your number of returns. some people have reportedly returned like 50% of things they buy and get cancelled.
