Are you working on your electric and just need to make sure something isn't hot and about to kill you? Can you not get your probes to somewhere and just need to know if there's power reaching it? Just in general it's a more convenient option to double check yourself before you wreck your hot dog fleshy self. Stick the tester in your pocket and have it with you the entire time you're working.

Nice find OP.. this looks like the lowest price on amazon in a literal decade.. it's crept up to and around $30-35 the last year or so.

The Southwire one has a smaller voltage range of 100V-600V. The Fluke is good from 90V-1000V. Also, you have the Fluke brand behind this one, assuming it's genuine.

I bought it because it matches my Fluke multimeter and other stuff.

Why get this over a Klein? Klein's can do lower voltage while still peaking at 1000 and for a couple bucks more you can get a GFCI tester and AC voltage tester. This isn't even on sale:

For slickdealer probably southwire one since you won't need above 600V unless working industrial/high voltage. One thing about southwire one is plastic end fell off on mine but some clear T7000 glue fixed it right back on and so far it has been pretty accurate for me.

I'll second that.
I recall some safety issues with some of the Southwire units, if I remember correctly. Fluke's reliability is a class above Klein and Southwire.

Add/edit: I did recall correctly. https://www.cpsc.gov/Recalls/2016...-Detectors

It's easier to put this up against a romex cable to see if it is hot than it is to strip possibly hot wires and hit them with a multimeter. It's also easier for testing power at an appliance than sticking a multimeter into a wire nut.

However, this does suffer from false positives if testing a wire that isn't hot but is run closely to other wires. A multimeter won't. This is a rare scenario though

Quality, and their ubiquity in HVAC, maintenance and electricians' toolkits. Klein's stuff isn't perfect. Anecdote below..

I recently got Klein's CL800 clamp meter and the dc clamp amperage readings can be somewhat unreliable. It doesn't auto zero switching into dc clamp amperage mode & seems to start with a good 0.4-0.1A offset until zeroed. It can tend to creep a bit after a reading too, but not huge amounts. It works fairly well overall otherwise though, and has a lot of other good features like non contact voltage detection and LoZ (low impedance) voltage measuring - all of which have been useful. Anyway, Fluke doesn't have anything that matched the functionality in one device.

Good for residential electrical projects like replacing an old receptacle. Turn it on, check it on a known live circuit, then check your outlet and/or electrical box for hot circuits. It's all about being able to double check whether you could get lit up.
