I have one of these and I can't find netflix, Hulu or a few banking apps on this device. I believe SafetyNet check is failing.

You can sideload apps by installing the apks but you will not get netflix in hd

The brand is very reputable. They used to be the third or fourth largest brand in the world but now they are the second or third. They are smart enough to not enter the US market in case some stupid politicians interfere free market to gain some profit by claiming every company from China has security issues without any evidence. That's why they beat Huawei in the last two years.

More or less. The extra RAM in this device would make a big difference. Change your launcher to Nova or something that you like. Miui launcher is horrible. Also, software updates on this device are not guaranteed. If you are adventurous, rooting and other firmware flashing guides are available on XDA. Fire Max 11 can be rooted and doesn't have custom firmware, yet.

also available on Amazon for approximately $40 more for the 4gb version, if you need it fast.

It's because Android as a tablet OS is horrible. There are tons of cheapo small ones that get like maybe 1 year of updates before they're abandoned. Samsung might be the only one trying to add things to the OS to make it more useful on tablets, but most other companies just don't have the resources for that.
