50 lumens is less of a "see" and more of a "be seen" light level. This would be great to have on your handlebars as a visual marker for others that won't dazzle them.

Before my knee injury, I commuted everywhere by bike, and 250 lumens was a) considered quite high for the time and b) just barely cut it for safe street riding. I had something like a 50 lumen light on the bike, but had the 250 lumen "beast" on my helmet so I could illuminate wherever my head was pointed without blinding drivers.

That target deal is still going. $13 you get 300 Lumens and a rear taillight. I've picked up 4 so far and they work great for the family on night rides. When I'm riding with friends I just run dual headlights. https://slickdeals.net/share/iphone_app/fp/836996

Nice, there's a Circle for 20% off too, but YMMV as always with Target coupons.

Good call. Looks like Amazon is price matching (few cents more) that Target deal with a $2.78 coupon on the product page.

I commute by bike daily rain or shine. 50 lumens is just is not enough for me even to be seen. My tail light is 50 lumens, headlight strobe is up to 450 lumens.

Aim headlight properly and you won't blind other drivers, just like headlights in a car.

I bike conservatively but have still been hit 3 times. My opinion might be biased.

In Amsterdam I saw bikes with headlights that were powered by induction from the wheels turning. I can't seem to find them. Anyone know about these?
Edit: after searching more I think it might be Reelight, but they seem expensive for what they are.

Am I the only one who thinks rear light is more important, at least for my city commute? I always go with the traffic on the side of the road and cars approach me from behind. There are very few cases I face a car in front of me. I still use a front light as good practice and of course to light up the road at night but I pay a lot more attention to rear light. I have a Cygolite 90 — 90 might not sound a lot but real 90 lumen is quite bright. I've seen too many "claimed" 200-300 lumen lights that are not as bright as my 90.

I agree 50 lumens is not enough for night time riding, 200 is the min these days.

Speaking of bike safety at night, I highly recommend putting reflective stickers on the wheel rims, that way they are much more visible and provide a large visual cue in motion that catches drivers eyes. It mimics the product Flectr 360 wing, you could buy it from their website below, or using reflective all weather tape from any hardware store is more cost effective.
