What is Shodan?:
  • Shodan is a search engine for Internet-connected devices. Are you interested in measuring which countries are becoming more connected, which version of Microsoft IIS is the most popular or you want to find the control servers for malware? Maybe a new vulnerability came out and you want to see how many hosts it could affect? Shodan helps answer these questions and more.
  • How is it different than other search engines?
    • The most fundamental difference is that Shodan crawls the Internet whereas other search engines crawls the World Wide Web. However, the devices powering the World Wide Web only make up a tiny fraction of what's actually connected to the Internet. Shodan's goal is to provide a complete picture of the Internet.
  • Full Run down of the service here.

Keep track of the devices that you have exposed to the Internet. Setup notifications, launch scans and gain complete visibility into what you have connected.

Can someone help me understand what this does?

Short answer is: hackers can use Shodan to search for devices (IP cameras, Internet of Things, etc) that are connected to the internet. They can see which ports the devices are using and hopefully connect to these devices with default username/password and pivot into your network.

The easiest, top level explanation and use for the average person - Use it to monitor your IP address and get periodic alerts if you're vulnerable. Worth $5 right there.

However, it's a much more robust tool if you really want to dive in to it.

Gives you ability to monitor 16 iIPs per month (useful to monitor your own servers etc). Also gives you 100 Scan credits and 100 Query credits per month (think 100 ChatGPT requests per month), which is arguably to more interesting part of shodan. Want more? Thats where the "subscription" comes in, starting at $69/month.

Like others, I bought it on sale years ago and, after a short period, I never use it because this "membership", and its usefulness, is so limited.

It seems like regular price is $49 for the lifetime membership. It seems interesting... Does anyone have any real world experience with them? It seems like vul reports are not available at this tier... understandable though I guess.

It seems like they have been around since 2009.

I've been a member a while. I don't think it's much of a risk to trust them with a fiver.

As for experience, I know that at the start of the Ukraine war the tool was used to find open security cameras in different towns, as a way to look for infiltrating troops or saboteurs.

Cant you just use nmap on linux to see all devices and open / exposed ports?

If you want to use a loudspeaker to show your intentions and trigger intrusion systems. Whereas with Shodan, it's just background noise.

Likewise, in the US, offensive 'hacking' is against the law, even for the good guys. Even if the portscan itself slides as not hacking, if the actually hacking went to court then the portscan would show direct intent. Doing a database query, maybe part of a degree more removed from intent?

if you're trying to keep your internet access private and protect your devices from cyber attacks, you need a trustworthy VPN like ExpressVPN and a good antivirus like Norton.
LOL. That article just lost all of its credibility. It's clearly an advertorial.

So basically it looks like a way to link your actual identity to an account ($5 payment via Stripe). Then, all the activity you do is linked to your real identity. I'm not suggesting it's a tool to cause harm, but if you do something illegal, looks like they will know who you are very quickly. Dunno, that's my thought.

Of course there are many, many reasons to use it legitimately. I'll pay the $5 since it looks useful to me.

Yes and no, this depends on one huge error to be made, that is directly connecting to the internet without a firewall. Who does that these days ? Most likely your router has a firewall in it that separates the internet (WAN) and your network (LAN). The firewall ignores all pings coming from the WAN unless a connection is initiated from the LAN side first. That initiation of connection from the inside of your network (LAN) causes the firewall to allow connections from that specific ip and port to the outside (WAN) ip and port. So anybody just sniffing around from the WAN side from an unknown ip and port, because no connection was initiated from within the network (LAN), will just get ignored. Unless you have setup your firewall to specifically permit queries from specific outside ports and forward them to a specific network (LAN) ip and port, like you would do if you want to set up a server. So one would have to be major massive mistake, to connect a device directly to the internet without a firewall. However, with my limited knowledge, this is just my guess. But it's not hard to imagine someone instantly getting fired if they ever made the mistake of hooking up the company ANYTHING directly to the internet unless it's a firewall.
