People need to understand that these type of non-solar, non-GPS, non-Radio seiko perpetual calendars use a very specific battery with a very specific replacement procedure. You need to do your homework if you'll DIY. If you go external it will cost you. Here's an amazon reviewer explaining it in more detail.

$60 battery replacement quote!!?? Took this to my trusted local jewelry/watch store to have the battery replaced. They explained the non-standard battery would cost me $60, AND explained the unusual date system this watch has would require a specific technician, and that tech was not working today. Had a nice long conversation and learned plenty about such things. Shame on Seiko for having this model still being sold. I believe other watches that probably cost less can get the calendar/date/leap year features downloaded automatically, and they use common watch batteries. Needless to say, I passed on the opportunity to do anything more with this watch. My ex-Seiko is now in their shop skeleton watch parts bin via my donation. I've been a happy and loyal Seiko customer for many many years. Not any more. Sad; it looked nice. I may go Casio and get 3 different watches for the price of one Seiko battery. When all features and cost of maintenance are the same, I enjoy(ed) having my Seiko watches. Shopping for another brand now
