Scanner is borderline useless unless you pay for a subscription

https://buy.matterport.com/plans
the free subscription that comes with this doesn't actually work for the main Pro camera.. just the mini included freebie mobile phone one
(note the "limited camera support" under starter plan)
Pro plan is $55/mo

I wouldn't call the hardware useless without a subscription, but it'd certainly be less than turnkey. If you were so inclined to buy one and open it up, you'd probably find some high resolution cameras connected by USB interface to a hackable off-the-shelf single-board-computer. The fancy image processing algorithms (the company's real value-add) are certainly locked away.

I always hoped they'd be bought by a Google or an Apple or some such - so much promise!

This company just laid off a ton of staff. Might not be around next year who knows.
