I got in with the orginal deal without any issues. There was a lot of misinformation in the orginal thread, but yes, all you have to do it just activate the phone with the fi app, then take the Fi SIM out and never touch it again (sock drawer it, trash it, etc). You can pop in a SIM from another carrier with no problem. After 120 days have passed you can verify that it's finalized in your fi account > savings > earned. At that point you can do whatever you want, the discount is yours to keep.

I think a significant difference here is we are not getting the storage upgrade for free? I got this deal last time but got the s23 ultra with 512gb for the same price as they are offering the 256gb.

You must activate the Google fi sim that comes inside the phone, that will trigger the 120 day counter
give it a few days and check that your accounts shows that you activated the sim and the counter is decreasing, 120 days, 119 and so on,
after that you can uninstall the Fi app, take out Fi sim card and put it away, and then insert your desired sim card
if you don't activate the Fi sim, they will deny the promotion and charge you full price of phone
Oh OK this is the part that I'm getting stuck on. So my wife would need to activate the sim on the phone, which means that her service would now transfer from her current phone to the new phone, and then after 120 days I could take the phone but not before. Am I being dense or am I getting it right.

I just bought an ultra on prime day for $850. I have google fi, is it worth the risk and hassle to return for $250?

Almost got charged the full price last time around. Bad experience with support.
Got the phone, but waited for the case to arrive before activating. Activated the phone about 2 weeks after it was delivered, carried it for a week, the fingerprint reader wasn't good so switched back to the old phone and promotion got cancelled. Had to call support. They refused the return, said I'm one week too late for that. Forced me to re-activate the phone.
Was able to work around the full price by activating the s23 then removing the card. I was able to use another phone with the FI sim card WARNING, do not activate the FI app on another phone. 120 days later things went back to normal.
Yeah that's all your fault. Nothing in Google Fi.

help me understand if theres a way around this, i read all the posts but I'm a little iffy on e-sims i don't really grasp that concept in my old age.

My wife has fi, i have tmobile. I need a new phone, she does not. If I buy this deal for her, is there a way she can continue to use her services with her phone, or is it in stone that she must basically use the s23u for 120 days until she can give it to me?
Fi phones are unlocked and can be used with any carrier right away. However, if your wife activates the S23U ultra in her account then she can only use s23U for her number from then on. If she moves that SIM to another phone, the promo will likely be void. So I suggest opening a line in her account (or a new FI account) first and then order the s23U on that line as an existing customer.

Is this dead? The only thing I'm seeing is for new customers only. It's not showing any deals for existing lines.

What a question to ask. Don't you know the value of $250 to you ? I mean it's only you that would know. You can't ask a stranger to decide if it's worth it. $100 is a no brainer so imagine $250.

I'm in the recent deal for 120 days with a galaxy fold 4. So I pop that sim into the s23u. Or ? Because I'm in the 120 days still for the fold 4. And I didn't add a new line for the s23u. I got the discount at checkout.

What's the difference between an unlocked phone and an ultra unlocked phone? Does an ultra unlocked phone have 5G?

Anyone checked the TIVs? Are they still bad like when they offered 140 on launch for a base s22?
