The second model(WUH721414ALE6L1) is the one WITHOUT the feature of power disable(3rd pin in SATA). In some motherboard and external enclosure, the drive might not start if the drive have power disable 3pin feature(the first model). The fix is quick but if you prefer fewer surprises(like drive unable to power on), you might want to take the second model(WUH721414ALE6L1).
If you're gonna rag on the drives, at least get your info right. Hitachi's were never DeathStars. You're thinking of the old IBM DeskStars which were, specifically, 75GB drives. In the wake of that disaster, IBM sold their disk business off to Hitachi, which never experienced the exploding platter issue that the "deathstars" were notorious for. Regardless, these aren't even Deskstar drives, they are enterprise grade Ultrastar drives. And in addition, that was over 20 years ago, get over it.
The Power Disable feature isn't the only difference. The WUH721414ALE6L1 is also a Self-Encrypting Drive (SED), not that most people will care.

I can't say for certain but I don't think many USB docks supply 3.3V, so it's unlikely to be a problem. I'd be more concerned about whether an adapter of that age will support this drive. I've seen some SATA-USB bridges that don't play well with these big drives.

I'm only half joking when I say, if you don't know the answers to these questions, you shouldn't be fooling with RAID and if you do know the answers, you'll know better than to mess with it. My more serious answer is, RAID isn't something that should be undertaken lightly. There can be serious drawbacks that are not always obvious. You should do some serious research before messing with it.

The E6L1.

This has been answered multiple times already.

WUH721414ALE6L1 - Self-Encrypting Drive and does NOT have the Power Disable feature (thus more likely to be compatible).

WUH721414ALE604 - Base model (no encryption) and DOES have the Power Disable feature.

I got some drives from them, one just died from begin of a year. Pretty easy, get a flat rate box small and don't throw away the padding they send it in and ship back to them. They sent out a new one 2 days later.

In for one, about that time again. Totally fine rolling the dice on storing some plex files after running the requisite tests.

Thanks for the info, but your comment is a little unclear. Which model has the possible compatibility issue due to the power disable pin?

Any feedback? Seems like a decent deal. How does it compare to some of the seagate offerings from same vendor?
These specifically are the HGST models (arguably the best drives out there), the newest ones coming w/ WD firmware/SKU. With SPD you 100% ABSOLUTELY want manufacturer recertified because they are brought back to original OEM conditions and are SEALED by WD in this case. I have 3 of these exact models they are chugging along and expect them to last without issues. I have found recertified to hold up as well if not better than brand new.

Note there are two different drives here. A "normal" one and a SED -> Self encrypting drive which will pair w/ OPAL software to do hardware encryption. Most people will not use that but you can buy either part number that is available.

Price wise this is excellent its less than 50% the cost of a new one, so you can do your own risk assessment but in the last 10 years I have bought 90% many recert and not one of the 15+ drives has died. Now 1 of the two new ones did (a Seagate), they replaced it w/ a recert and it is now 7 years old.

This is small evidence however I have replaced thousands of drives in my day so all I can tell you is that outside bad batches of drives, dying drives is pretty random and they usually die outside 5 years so warranties are rarely exercised. The two year one will help if there is some nagging mechanical, surface, or bad batch which should have been caught in the recert.

This is a great deal for those running NAS enclosures or Plex servers.

for the synology users ...

before deployment, do you test the drives via the synology extended SMART test or on a PC using the WD diagnostic tools?

any input appreciated

Advice for data transfer. I have synology Nas connected to a DAS with four bays. I would like to consolidate 5TB in das into the new 14tb ultrastar. Fastest method to transfer is through synology or use an external hdd copy device (sabrent 2 hdd external copier)? Thanks

I actually bought one of these last year when my old old old seagate 3TB finally started to get read errors. Everything backed up and transferred over fine and I've been happy ~9 months at this point. But I don't know a lot about RAID stuff, despite my motherboard having a pretty ample amount of crap for it?

Is it possible to add another one of these as a blank and then stripe it with my current 14tb drive so that I could have some redundancy? Are there any RAID formats where you can add multiple drives but the total TB is greater than any one drive? e.g. 3x 14tb drives but striped in a way that say, the total available space is more like 20tb instead of 14tb?

Thanks in advance!
