If you look into docks, you'll quickly find that there are a variety of USB and HDMI specifications as well as configurations. If you're looking for a dock that powers your laptop, supports Thunderbolt (display over USB essentially), HDMI, and other ports or adapters like SD cards, then the $30 hubs don't actually do all of those at once in one device.

Slightly flipped around backwards. More like why is anyone wanting HDMI output ports on a docking station.

With computers, DisplayPort is more popular. It's packet based switchable designed for various computer use environments and configurations. And, yes, you get audio with it if you want.

HDMI was originally intended for TV's. It started out as a DVI signal with audio pins and evolved from there. It's still primarily targeted for home theater.

Dumb question: why buy this over a cheap $30-ish box with HDMI/USB-C/USB-A/SD?

Seems like a good deal. However, upon checking, this dock was originally released in 2018 which makes it 5 years old. Any idea if a newer model is around the corner? Also, only DisplayPort 1.4. No HDMI port.

I've got a TS4 with a MacBook Pro M1. This is a great deal on the previous model. I agree with one of the previous commenters, I tested many different docks before landing on the TS4. CalDigit's stuff just works.

Thunderbolt docks are able to utilize more bandwidth than USB 3.1 docks (40Gbps vs 10Gbps.) For example, if you want to run a 4K monitor from a USB dock, then the SD card reader will likely have to run at slower speeds. If you're just connecting a monitor and keyboard+mouse, then a cheaper USB dock is probably all you need.

Yes latest is TS4 from last year. It has one more Thunderbolt port and two more USB-C ports and supports USB-C laptop in addition to Thunderbolt laptop. None of them are attractive enough for me to pay extra 200 to get.

The price is wrong! Amazon is selling it for $299 and not $199!
