I guess $20 is fine, but be aware it's pretty easy to find these generic docks in the $20-$30 range regularly.

As a random example, this dock on Amazon [amazon.com] can be had for $26.99 - 30% coupon = $17.99. It's been this price with this coupon for at least 3-4 weeks, if not longer.

I've been keeping my eye out and just haven't pulled the trigger on one yet. As far as I can tell, all you'e really picking are available ports, dock design, and Steam Deck charging cable design. I haven't noticed too many comments discussing 'quality' on these. They all seem to be the same as one would probably expect.

Again, good deal...but in this case the 'pointless price' that Woot! uses is in fact a pointless price this time around, as these will never cost you $49.99 if you take 3 minutes to research.

The front lip is definitely involved in keeping the Steam Deck propped up even on the official one from Valve. There's no way it stays upright without it.

That being said, I disagree that any of these docks pose a long term risk to the integrity of the Steam Deck. The ones I've seen all come with some sort of silicone padding at the base and on the inside of the front lip. It's not like your screen is being pushed into straight up metal.

FYI, in case you were mistaken, the OP @ woot is not for Valve's steam deck dock, the manufacturer of this one is "zyerch". Amazon equivalent item is https://www.amazon.com/Docking-St...0BRKTG9WZ/

Just my opinion (and I have no evidence to support it): I do not think these Steam Deck docks that seem to hold up the Deck using pressure against the screen PULLING away from the SD are a good idea. I believe the Steam Deck should rest against the back using gravity, be supported behind the device. I have a JSAUX stand [amazon.com] (same formfactor, not a "dock") that appeared to be putting pressure directly against the screen of my Steam Deck. I didn't like it and stopped using after a few weeks. Ended up 3D printing a stand which wasn't as vertical the Deck could lean on. This style is probably fine for occasional however I do not think the screen is a great place for the entirety of the Deck's weight should be pressed against, long term at least. /rant
I imagine the standard dock design for the steam deck is adequate for most. As a professional cat enthusiast, they just don't work. I've opted for a wall plug which then feeds to the steam deck through some furniture. It also works for my Switch, which is rather nice because F that dock too.

Aside from the form factor, is there any reason this won't work a as a USB-c hub on regular laptop?<=$20 seems like a decent deal for one with ethernet and 4K@60hz.
It will work. It's just awkward to plug in.

Compared to the official one from Valve and the more expensive one from JSAUX, this one doesn't have DisplayPort.

Involved, yes. Not sure when I claimed otherwise. Not angled into the screen...pressing against, is where my issue lies. The lip on the official dock is angled AWAY from the screen and appears to be there to simply prevent the entire dock from sliding forward. That design makes sense, to me at least. Creating a single pressure point on the screen, not so much.

The screen is being bowed, to some degree at least (could be an infinitesimal amount), Force at one end and lack of release of force at the other will cause a bend. Not really up to debate how solids respond to uneven forces. What is questionable, and I admitted I had no evidence, if this would cause damage long term. But to me the risk-reward relationship just isn't there. For zero reward I assume some (hypothetical) risk. I'm not telling you what to do or not to do. Just stated my personal concern. Feel free to label me a tinfoil hat wearer but I will use my 3D printed dock or just lay my Steam Deck flat when charging.

Isn't that the same way the official steam deck is used?
I have one of these, your concerns are null trust me... There is no issue or strain on the screen at all. The lip is actually PERFECT for the deck. Makes the setup easier. I bought this as a second one, to simply have it ready to slap my deck on my big screen, and use an xbox controller to play retroarch all day... This is a good deal since it includes the charger!

1) You are replying to the wrong person.
2) I didn't say this dock, I said one of similar design. This one appears to have the same "flaw" (as I see it) BUT I have no hands on experience with this particular model so I cannot be sure. I am speaking ONLY of the JSAUX Stand which certainly does press against the screen. You could do a 'dollar bill test,' similar to checking the seal of your refrigerator to check where pressure is being applied. There will be almost no friction from the behind the Deck and the dollar bill would probably rip when trying to pull it between the screen and front lip (or the Steam Deck will move at least). This shows very very clearly that there is far more pressure being exerted against the screen being pinched by the lip as opposed to the back leaning against the dock. Frankly, there is zero reason to put pressure against the screen at all. Regardless if this will cause damage, it is a shortsighted design.

Let me clear this up so you can stop replying to everyone with useless, unproven, conjecture.

I have a third party dock exactly the same shape as this. My deck sits there 8+ hours every day while I work. My deck is perfectly fine and will obviously stay that way with continued use of the dock. The light force of gravity at this steep angle is a non-issue. By your argument, holding your deck with one hand will completely destroy it lol. Utterly ludicrous.

By the way, none of these docks actually touch the screen. FYI, the bottom-front edge of the steam deck where it meets any of these docks is just part of the case, not the screen.

I just checked my dock (got it free a while back) and it appears to be the exact same one as this deal:
https://cloud.jaredkidd.com/apps/...10a3d3363e
Let me save you the trouble, DO NOT BUY this dock. It works fine enough as a usb hub and that's what I use it as - just for usb, ethernet, sitting on my desk.
The video output on this dock is trash. I could never get the advertised 4k60 out of it, only 4k30 and after a few minutes of using it, sound and then video will start to cut out. My suspicion is the dock overheats quite fast and then video stops working until it cools down again.

So you are going to tell me your opinion of my dock is better than my opinion of my dock?

So the same basic shape, not the exact same dock? So you 'conjecture' they are all exactly the same? Sounds pretty 'unproven' and almost a 'useless' comparison.

So "I did drugs for 8 years and didn't die therefore drugs are safe for everyone no matter what they are or who made them " is the basic theory? Can you quote me saying damage was guaranteed? Or that it happens within an 8 hour time period? I am just saying it might be possible (again, sad I keep having to say this) in theory, and over time.

Simiar damage is caused all the time on cell phones from docks or cases pinching the screen. It is amazing how much damage "light forces" applied over hundred or thousands of hours can do. Typing isn't dangerous per se but can cause carpal tunnel syndrome.

Quote me saying anything remotely similar. I'll wait.....

Is your point so shaky you have to insert words into my mouth to argue with? LMAO

Mine does and hence my complaint and I even provided an Amazon link to the exact product I purchased.

What is that clear thing that is part of the LCD? Looks a lot like glass and has a touch interface. Is that part of the case as well? Just to make sure I am not confused.

"Let me clear this up so you can stop replying to everyone with useless, unproven, conjecture." I am talking about the GLASS SCREEN.

LOL....
Straw man much? LOL@this guy. Produce some sources and proof of what you are claiming or STFU.

Straw man, that didn't age well. LMAO2

And where are your "sources?" Funny only works one way...

BTW, where is your quote of me? "STFU" yourself unless you can provide it.
It's your argument, not mine. wow lol. What reality do you live in?
