Black Embers backpack straps fold into the back wall of the bag so fully turn into a side held brief case that looks the part. It's pretty common on a lot of their business oriented backpacks - including their top briefcase "Forge". A few other companies do this too... I think the generic term for this is "convertible backpack" or "convertible briefcase". Variations of a similar thing of having a backpack, where the arm straps tuck in or hide away and then you can grip it from the side like a briefcase too.

Black Ember is comparable to brands like Aer, very similar level of quality.

If you envision being with her long-term, then skip it. I dunno about your finances, but there's a responsibility to your partner to keep spending like this in check. You've already bought two other expensive (to me anyways) backpacks. Do you really need a third? Else, get rid of one of the others. If you're financially responsible and your girl buys a new pair of shoes/bag/xyz every other month (or more??), then have at it. Eventually, you start running out of space to keep all the stuff you buy. I used to buy stuff all the time too. In the end, I realized most of that stuff I didn't really use that much or could have done without.

Seems like a nice pack but I will stick with my Jansport Superbreak. It has 26L capacity and is cheap and doesn't stand out. It doesn't have all the organizational stuff but that takes up room.

Completely different category. This isn't setup for camera gear and is more for commuting, not hiking.

Glad to hear that before I bought this. I have a Peak Design 20L Zip that I like but it's on the heavier side. I'm guessing this isn't the bag to replace it though. My normal loadout is camera + tech pouch + laptop + papers or tablet. Any suggestions on backpacks that would fit that loadout? I looked at a ton a while back (including the PRVKE but didn't love the roll top), and mainly ended up with the Peak Design because it was on local clearance at Best Buy.

Look into pgytech bags. Their onemo 2 sounds like it'll work well for you. I have several pgytech bags and moved to them from peak design and never looked back.

I'd say their biggest selling point is their 3 layer design. They have high quality rip stop which is popular among backpackers. Also the magnetic closures on the inside.
