this does not pump water into the seed pods. The light is inferior. Germination is much slower.

Owning a few Aerogardens, and a few of the cheaper ones, I'd say there's a bit more to it than that but not enough to justify the retail price of the Aerogardens.

That said, this sucker is listed at a retail of $108.99 when it doesn't even circulate the water which is absolutely insane. It's "retail' is even $9 more than the price of the 3 pod Aerogaden which does do that and also doesn't look like a countertop science experiment.

Obviously, this is never going to be at the "full" price on Amazon but I'd say for a no-name, it's not even that good of a deal at the current price as a search for "hydroponic" on Amazon will yield better larger units that come with pumps and better pack-ins at prices with coupons that are always there, bringing them pretty close to this "sale" price.

It's incredible that I regularly use a 3D printer at work and have never considered printing the inserts until this comment. Jesus.

The inserts look like AeroGarden, I would love to have it as a 2nd or a smaller unit to the AeroGarden I have, but can this use the AeroGarden inserts?

The pieces look identical, but worse case scenario find a friend with a 3d printer and grab some jiffy peat pellets from the Lowe's/Home Depot.

To bad you missed prime day, the Aerogarden was $50 for 6 pods. Picked up a couple when i saw that price. Technically this is half of that price with half the pods. If you need it now get it, if you can wait I'm sure Amazon will drop the aero gardens durring their next prime day or Black Friday. If anything buy it now, use it then replace it later if you want Aerogarden quality.

I picked up Aerogarden slim model for $30 at Macy's. I would check the clearance section if you have a Macy's store around.

How long do the herbs stay alive in these? I live alone so I can only use so much at a time, but maybe it would be worth it versus grabbing the individual clamshells from Publix

Well, for one, they're more stylish - especially the 3 pod model (Sprout) so if you want this in your kitchen or your office or living room (say for flowers) they look a lot nicer.

Aerogarden also tells you the wattage output of the lights. Most of the generics, like this one don't seem to list that.

Even the cheapest models of the Aerogardens circulate the water and will prompt you to add the nutrients and the higher end ones offer more customized grow options for different plants to get better yields.

The Aerogardens also ship with pre-seeded pods that are guaranteed to germinate.*

I don't really think all of that is worth the crazy retail prices for Aerogardens but it might be worth waiting for a sale on one, especially if you have a history of killing plants due to neglect. I picked up two sprouts not that long ago in a sale where they were $25, too. Those were nice and giftable. This one I'd never buy for anyone.

*the guarantee is that they'll replace the pods free of charge if they don't germinate. I've had to take them up on that. You don't necessarily need to keep buying their pods but for just starting out, that's a nice assurance.

I can't speak to this unit, specifically though it looks kind of like junk to me but generally, with hydroponics, you can expect the plant to last at least as long but usually a good deal longer than it would outside as long as you grow the right sized plant for the right sized unit.

You mentioned the clamshells. You can actually buy one of those and start plants from them as "cuttings" with a few different types of herbs if you want to get a jump start. it's an easy way to make the magic happen and not throw out the leftovers of what you've already purchased and may have sitting in your fridge.

Each herb has a different grow cycle. Some are perennial and some aren't and some will grow like weeds and end up too big for something like this in no time crowding out others for light and nutrient absorption below, like Basil which, in my experience, grows like a weed in hydro.

I'd encourage you to search up hydroponics on Amazon and look around. Nobody really needs an Aerogarden but you can do better than this for a comparable price.

Ended up going with the Aerogarden harvest 360 on Amazon. 6 pod in "like new" condition for $53 seems definitely better than this offering and comes with six types of herbs which is what I'd like to start with before doing some lettuce and tomatoes.
