Can I get some feedback on this? How does it compare to traditional non rack mounted units?

What's max hd capacity?

How's the software?

Fast enough processors on this for basic serving of media (assume Plex is on another machine)

I don't think anyone who owns a rack and 10GbE will be impressed by that CPU. And there's been a LOT of kickback lately against NAS makers who lock clients onto their ecosystems. Most server admins I know would either want a full contract with a provider for their job or an x86 system for their homebrew.

I've used this unit at work. Wouldn't recommend. The ARM (Annapurna labs) processor isn't up to snuff and lacked some basic functionally when it came out regarding being able to remotely power on after a power outage (since been fixed). As far as I know, there's still a bug in their rsync implementation that causes the unit to freeze and become unresponsive if you tell it to sync symlinks. x86 or bust. Before this unit we used the 462 and didn't have issues, but it isn't short depth of that's why you're looking for

I've had a few qnaps and 1 system even got hit with deadbolt ransomeware. Still pissed bc the only port open on the qnap was for Plex. UPnP was disable since day 1, myqnapcloud was also disabled since day 1. Really hated the lack of transparency from qnap.

That being said, every nas provider has their similar story. I stick with qnap for their hw value -this specific system doesn't seem like a good value unless you need the most basic NFS/SMB/iSCSI rack mounted storage with 10gbe. That arm cpu won't help you with Plex unless are your clients are directplay only and no hw transcoding required. DDR3 also is a red flag for performance and lack of versatility should your needs grow

Personally, I'm waiting for x86 version

This is ewaste. Why include 10g when your CPU will never be able to sustain it. A15 is an over 10 year old 32bit only architecture what a joke.

CPU seems to be dated, with today's standard.

What would be the benefit of going with one of these vs say an old Dell R730 8LFF? Seems like you get a lot more with the Dell that you wouldn't with this thing.

Found this deal by searching "rackmount" and sorting by new.

On eBay I'm seeing companies liquidating their Xeon W servers (Skylake era, so it supports ddr4 ecc) with excellent single core performance relative to the price and enterprise hardware taxes.

Decided to buy one, got my server for around $130 without a hard drive, ram, and GPU. You can get all of those and get them all and way more and even another working one for the price difference of this.

Total cost of ownership. Power consumption at idle on xeons will be higher than a loaded qnap with lesser cpu.

If you have cheap electricity and cooling, by all means go Xeon. If you're like me with a 12U rack in the garage (on the hot side with poor air circulation), thermal management is what I prioritize.
