Start by letting them play NES and later tell them the Genesis was invented. Keep doing this once a year until you're caught up to the latest generation. My kid is blown away moving from GameCube to Wii right now.
The Penny Arcade guys did a comic about this a couple years back and I was already in deep but it is a blast. I got all the OG consoles and multicarts/ODEs. Wait til he plays the v1 switch with 1TB loaded up.

One day. I will tell my kids. Their dad is so bad ass that he got so much games in EPIC, AmAzon, GOG, and STEAM that he will pass it to them to play.

Exactly how I intend on introducing games to my kid! Start at the bottom and work up. She'll appreciate them more that way, I can't imagine being a kid playing something modern and then going back 30 years in technology.

My kid is 9 and already doing it! Little stumble around 7 where I had to squash his switch dreams while steering him toward the tamer games in my other libraries. Two years later he understands the full power of the PC/TV setup I've bestowed upon him. Enough games, emulators, etc for a lifetime. 😈

Mega Man series is a great way to do this. Playing it on Switch is a great way to do both new and old, and has some minor quality of life improvements (save states).

If you can still get it, I highly recommend roguebook. It looked like garbage based on the icon and screenshots, but it is an rogue lite card game

I've played quite a few. For me I started picking them up weekly starting with Batman Arkham trilogy which I missed during 360 gen because I was a CoD player. Ruiner was a cool twin stick shooter. Ape Out is a must play Indie, IMO. It's really original. Steep is super chill and Drawful 2 is a great party game for all. I have so many more I've dabbled in. I also only have an old laptop with a NVIDIA 1050.

I definitely have some good ones, but I have backlogs about a mile thick. Might be able to do Epic Games library in like 2025. Just bought a ton of N64/SNES/NES games I've never had, so that will take up my next year lol. Bought a cart reader and running the games in Retroarch on my 65"

For me Quake 2, specifically WOD mod, is still the most fun ive ever had in video games. Still the most intense gaming sessions ive ever had. WOD mod gave you a grappling hook and id just swing around the map with a railgun shooting people without my feet ever hitting the ground lol.35 kill limit reached in 3-5 minutes, total chaos lol
