If this is the first time you play the game, it takes 1-2 hours of story/cut scenes before you actually start doing anything. The combat is difficult until you get party members. The AI for the party members is really bad.

The animated cut scenes are amazing, but were not as frequent as I was hoping.

I really wanted to love this game knowing it has glowing reviews and beautiful art, but I found it to be a slog. Ended up cheesing it with the Griffin and finding the dinosaur so I could speed through.
Great game, but be aware the Switch version is a bit laggy. Even after several patches/updates.
The complaints people have are not unfounded. It's slow paced and travel in the beginning makes you question your commitment. The difficulty is also relatively high but gets easier as the game unfolds. Boss Battles will test you.

That being said, it's an awesome game and visually stunning. More cutscenes would be nice or maybe just more consistency, but I get that they probably could only have so much included and tried their best to blend the gameplay scenes and cut scenes when they could.

The pokemon aspect of the game is interesting...you need to commit to it, in order to make the game easier, but you don't need to go extremely deep into numerous familiars and sets. Best thing to do is identify which familiars work best with specific party members, understand the "treats" they need to keep them satisfied, and then basically focus on only those familiars.

If you plan to pick this up, and for $10 on Switch its a fantastic investment, just know that using a guide (especially for the familiar side) is warranted. I generally avoid guides, but the older I get, the more I just want to experience the game and be less worried about spoiling the "discovery" aspect of it.

I bought this for $5 on ps3 10 years ago and never finished it. Tempted to pick it up again but can't stomach paying more than I did then.

Hot take: this game is super overhyped and honestly quite bland and boring

Why purchase a game at all a second time if you failed to finish it in 10 years the first time?

It's the Slickdeals way!

It's easier for me to play things on the switch, and I kind of enjoyed it. That said, you're correct that I don't need to and shouldn't purchase this.

Good game, but extremely slow pacing. Would be fine if you got fast-travel or ability to run quicker at the beginning of the game, but it takes several hours before you do.

Because the portable factor makes it much easier to play through in spurts. I was the same way with this game and Skyrim and finished both on Switch.

Have this game and gave up after I got stuck in the pirate's cave with no way out due to the difficulty. I was on the lowest game setting, as I just wanted the story, and completing all quests to level my pokemon.

I ended up watching the "movie" in youtube, where its just the good parts of the story on display.

If you do play this game and see it to the end, be sure to watch the Ni No Kuni anime on Netflix.

This game was originally developed as a handheld game before it was given an extra dungeon and ported to PS3. The gameplay makes sense as a handheld game as the battle system is a passive, pseudo-mmo style and the fun is in collecting monsters, watching them evolve, watching their stat numbers go up, grinding and building the perfect squad. The graphics are beautiful, the story is surprisingly good, but it's a pokemon game. Which means it's a game you play while watching TV.

People saying this game is boring aren't wrong, but many people find the rpg grind very relaxing and almost therapeutic. This game does what it does very well, it's like gaming comfort food.
