Fishing is expensive too. I suppose we should stop fishing and only buy our fish from grocery stores?

What's crazy is walking into a room of aerogarden enthusiasts and telling them all they are dumb and wasting their money.

Good thing you have the internet to protect you from a real life altercation.

yeah, just a few days to collect details, then fuel and time to do pick-ups, a few hours to figure out how to build something that works the same way, few days for reading about hydroponic basics. So you end up with 300$+ crappy-looking piece (if you actually count everything, not just 2-3 random parts) instead of 250$ for a great-looking device with a warranty delivered to your door. So yeah, that works, if you are super-into diy and have a bunch of free time and all the required tools and (what's even more important) a place to build this thing.

If you're real cheapskate you can do something similar way cheaper. Plastic tub with lid + Holesaw + netcups +$10 pumps + $6 tubing and airstone + coco coir n perlite + timer. Decent LED grow lights are very cheap on the second hand market, too.

Won't look as nice, but still.

I bought the 24XL on the last sale and it has been great. Just be aware that if you plan to grow things like tomatoes, you're supposed to only grow 4 of them per 12 slots.

What makes for a decent LED grow light?

I grow a single tomato per 12 spots. They grow massive, I have a Farm24 Plus with a single red and single golden cherry tomato and it takes up the entire thing, grow lights are at the highest setting and I had to buy a second set of trellis to try to keep it contained. There is no way 4 plants will fit unless you are constantly trimming them back.

The cheapest I've ever seen these is $225 so this is a good deal. I have 2 of these 12XL's, a 24Plus and a couple little bountys. I really like the 12XL, I'm currently growing tomatoes and Jalapenos in them and Lettuce and Herbs in the 24Plus. They work great.
I ordered one of them on Best Buy, the others were from Aerogarden and Amazon. The one from BestBuy came with outdated seed pods, they were a year past the sell by date so 70% of the seed pods did not germinate. BestBuy wanted me to exchange the entire unit, I suggested they give me credit so I could order a seed pod kit from Aerogarden and keep the equipment since it was fine and they approved it and I got my credit.
I think the QC in the seed pod department has gone down a bit as I have had a pod grow crab grass one time, which was supposed to be Chives. Other people have had some similar issues in online reviews. I have not had any other issues and I love my gardens. If you are on the fence, I would go for it, no need to wait to see if it ever goes to $225 again, it's not often.

Not the OP but I have a 24xl and a few smaller units and have never had bugs.

I bought two of the Harvest models (6 pods each) on Prime Day, $50 each, but no trellis. I like them, they can't handle super-tall plants, and I haven't harvested anything yet (probably a week or two away from that).

BUGS: I haven't had any. The mfg suggests that if you see any, you spray those leaves with water. (I dunno' how that's supposed to be effective.)

you could try some determinant varieties if you decide to kill off your indeterminant monster. that's probably what the 4/12 suggestion is based on.

i let an indeterminant cherry variety go for over a year just to see what would happen, but it got boring and not worth the hassle of constantly fighting and cleaning up after the vines.

$250 to grow $8 worth of tomatoes. Unbelievable. Lol 😂

We've reached peak craziness.

i got an aphid infestation last year that i just couldn't get rid. ended up just euthanizing everything but chives which they either didn't like or just don't have the right structure for them to get their suckers into.
I did consider trying to find some ladybugs to release into the apartment, but couldn't find any outside.
