yeah, just a few days to collect details, then fuel and time to do pick-ups, a few hours to figure out how to build something that works the same way, few days for reading about hydroponic basics. So you end up with 300$+ crappy-looking piece (if you actually count everything, not just 2-3 random parts) instead of 250$ for a great-looking device with a warranty delivered to your door. So yeah, that works, if you are super-into diy and have a bunch of free time and all the required tools and (what's even more important) a place to build this thing.

Absolutely agree, and yet I'd buy one for my lady in a heartbeat.

Because some people enjoy growing things.

Decoration, hobby, etc.

I can't tell you the amount of stuff I own that I got because I wanted it, not a need, not because it's efficient.

But because it's something I wanted or enjoy.

The only reason I don't have a $500 3D printer to print 3 or 4 $5 items once a year is simply I don't have a place for it lol

Ill chip one in as well, i have an aerogarden and gave it away. The amount of time i had to spend watering and adding plant food was enormous, and i think the electricity it cost actually ended up being way more expensive. i tried some cherry tomatoes and basil, cherry tomatoes yielded almost nothing, basil was weirdly way too hard, the one i get from whole foods in a plastic planter and water for 3 months is 1000x better (and $6 and i can sit it next to my sink and almost waters itself)

Its great if you cook a ton with fresh herbs thaaats about it.

i tried and gave up on this. everything i grew had very little flavor. nothing and i mean nothing beats growing food outside, in a raised bed with a good compost and mulch.

I'm living in a town home with neither, which is how I got into these hydroponic things.

I have 2 $55 slims from woot and 2 $95 Harvest XLs currently.

I'm kicking around the idea of this farm, but I think it's probably crossing some kind of line for me.

Anyway, this is a fun hobby if you want to grow some plants but don't have space outside to do it.
