Don't be afraid of these because they're battery operated. I've used mine heavily for the past 2 years and they still have the original battery in them.

I have 2 of these. Decent cameras, nothing phenomenal in terms of video quality/resolution, but they work.
I also have one of the regular Blink cameras that has been disconnecting every few days for no apparent reason. In the process of replacing it now. We'll see how the new one works out.

A subscription is not required. A long time ago, blink's internal memory (usb thumb drive) would load decently fast and you could see a clip in a timely manner. Then Blink upgraded their system and it took so long to load a clip, that I finally switched to paying for their cloud subscription. I have multiple cameras so it's $10/month or $100/yr.

I have blue stacks downloaded on my computer and I am able to use my cameras on my PC. For the record, I have an android phone and windows based pc. Not sure how feasible this is with apple devices.

They're battery operated, so while you can check in and watch live, they're not like a wired DVR system that is recording full time to save battery life. It has motion detection that will record for like 10-30 seconds to a USB drive (not included) plugged into the main Blink Sync Module. Or you can buy a Blink subscription to get access to their cloud service and not need the USB thumb drive.

You can but the more you watch the faster those battery will drain out. Battery operated has one more weakness as it loads longer when previewing videos or even checking snapshots. I'm comparing between wired/wireless Blink, not sure about other brands.

I have 16 of these in various models around the business i work at. I am able to select a timeframe for armed and disarmed (when they record and live video). Its $108 a year for the subscription. The app works well and have no complaints.
