Um, it says it's in a helium-sealed drive design.
I just glanced and noticed $279.99 at ServerPartDeals https://serverpartdeals.com/produ...hard-drive
Better company too

with newegg, you have random packer at the warehouse lottery. laugh out loud
Nice! I searched around a little bit and agree that it seems that their packaging is excellent. For example see photo in https://old.reddit.com/r/DataHoar...s_amazing/

Not to mention you have no idea what region they're coming from. It's a PITA for warranty purposes

Guys these drives are noisy as hell. Anything above 14TB and not filled with helium is going to be noisy. These are enterprise drives not meant for the home environment. unless you are keeping them tucked away in the basement.
Interesting...I did not know larger ones had this issue. I recently got a 18TB Seagate One Touch Hub external drive for plex....sit all day with it and i don't hear it. I'm guessing since it's the casing, but wonder if the drive has helium in it as well.

Still noisy. I have a 14TB waiting to be returned. Unless the 20TB is different it's going to make loud thumping noises while accessing data (I was using it in a media player so it constantly makes noises when watching a 4K movie). "tak tak tak tak tak".....quiet for a second or 2 ........ "tak tak tak tak tak"

I then got a WD Red Plus 14TB, completely silent.
I have a few X20 20TB drives and an X18 18TB drive and don't have this issue. While it's normal for some drives to spin louder than others, thumping and clicking are often signs of failing or faulty drives. Time to backup and return it or claim warranty if you pass the return window.

I bought 4 to upgrade my Synology; I did NOT see a problem with noise but I do have a server cabinet.

That being said, be aware not all NAS will be able to recognize the full size of these drives. I assume this will evolve over time.

Would this be a good drive for cold storage (5-10 years before I replace with a new drive)? family photos and videos pretty much.

Yes if you're using some form of RAID with parity or storage volume with duplication on another drive. I wouldn't trust anything important on a single drive

Not that I necessarily recommend recertified, but serverpartdeals has this drive, but manufacturer recertified, for $219.99:

I got recertified one from serverpartdeals back in April. So far there's no performance issue, nor noise issue either. Perhaps the noise is depends how/where you mount the drive. I put the drive in a slot with anti-vibrate foam.

I had it mounted in my media center and there is probably no room for a vibration reduction foam or something like that because the drive slides out and not physically mounted from top. The replacement WD Plus 14TB is super quiet when watching a movie.
