That was my exact experience as well. Had an unopened iPad and Apple Pencil and they ripped it open and said it's their policy. So it was, in fact, brand new and most likely labeled as refurbished for sale. Seems silly to me but what do I know.
I don't understand why they decrease the value of items (such as Apple products) by doing this. Some Target stores say it is policy and others do not.

I do understand that they want to prevent fraudulent returns, but it's pretty obvious that nothing is suspicious when the item is still factory-sealed and the serial #s match etc.

In addition if something goes awry with processing the refund, the employee has just made it look like you returned a used product when you didn't even open it.

That's false. Target Circle offered $100 off for $399.99. Getting it for $299.99 required you to price match another retailer for $399 and use the Circle offer, which is against Target policy. People got it, but many were declined. Definitely YMMV.

Just $77 off to buy someone's beat up used consumer electronics item. Because nothing ever goes wrong with them.

Hey, to each their own. For a few dollars more on a multi-hundred dollar item, you can buy a brand new unit with a full warranty + ability to buy an extended warranty. Takes all the ambiguity out of the situation.
it's $178 off. this retails for $499

Yeap, and online agents were told to decline price matches as well.

How is it false when you just explained how it worked.

30+ pages of people getting it to work with ipads including this ipad mini.

If someone couldn't get it done then they just didn't want it enough
"Two weeks ago Target had the same ipad brand new for 300 after Circle offer" is a false statement.

If you purchased it from Target and used the Circle offer, it would've been $399.99 + tax. Your statement completely omits the need to price match with a competitor.

Also more people were declined than approved. Not wanting it badly enough had nothing to do with it. It was more about the timing of how soon you requested a price match once the Circle offers began on Sunday along with whether local employees knew/cared.

Take care.

And very frequently goes on sale for $400, and on scAmazon's summer sale, it was $380. So technically, it was $58 more for a brand new model.

But hey, you snooze you lose. Now either buy someone's sloppy seconds or pay full MSRP like a pleb.

based on that logic, why not just steal one if you want it even more badly!

Here is an example. I returned a brand new "as in I didn't even open". I bought it sat on it for a few days and realized that I don't need it at all after thinking more about it. I got to target they immediately ripe the box open and took out the iPad. I told them no need to check I didn't even open. But they said this is policy. I told them okay as long as I get my money back. So there you have it "opened".
I had a same experience at BestBuy. I accidentally bought older version of Macbook Pro and returned it next day and bought a newer version of it. The customer service broke the seals and opened the box.

They said it was Apples policy tho. I guess there are too many scams replacing the item inside

I think the same way, but for some, $60 is a huge difference.

Well, people used to take out ipad and put some random shit in the box. Afterward put a shrink wrap around and return it to the store stating that it was never opened.

This happened frequently to walmart when ipad first launched.

Hence the current policy of opening up any returns by the customers.

If a store just accepts returns without any inspection of the content, scammer groups will undoubtedly do this sort of nonsense systematically.

Also making counterfeit seal and shrink wrap will be easier to pull off(and more profitable) then making counterfeit bills.

A couple years ago I returned a tablet to Walmart ,new and sealed. Had the receipt, 100% legit return and CS lady goes to zip it open. I was saying wait, it's new, you could just stick it back on the shelf. But she says they can't do that and I quickly realized why. They have to check that someone is not returning a box with a rock inside.

I understand the scenario you outline, but the policy to open returns is not universally enforced. You'd think it would be the same at every Target or every Walmart etc.

Also Apple's shrink wrap is different-looking than other retailers due to their unique tabs. Plus Apple ended the shrink wrap for most of its products still on sale. They use pull tabs now. Have scammers duplicated that?
