I've had it for about 3 weeks, no downsides I can see with it. It works very well and runs very cool.

Oh and I've been running 64 Gig in mine since I bought it.

[*]Windows 11: You are stuck with Windows 11. Do not try to downgrade a 12th/13th gen Intel CPU to Windows 10, as Win10 can't tell the difference between the P-cores and E-cores. If you do, some apps might get shunted to the much slower E-cores when P-cores are available, and I would assume battery life would suffer as well.
Is Windows 11 considered a bad thing? From everything I've seen it's a fair degree faster than Windows 10 especially for devices with limited resources like laptops (gaming laptop aside the resources are still more limited than desktops).

asus tuf +
better gpu rtx 4070

both have not so great displays
Costco only has a 70 watt hour battery I believe.

Couldn't get the earlier ASUS ROG Zephyrus deal because it didn't offer shipping. That laptop costed $450 more, but it had a better display, a 13th gen CPU, and DDR5 RAM, which makes this deal less tempting

This guy does an entire unboxing/benchmark testing for this laptop (looks like the same exact model). It is a pretty long video, but makes the laptop quite appealing. His biggest complaint seems to be CPU getting slightly toasty on some CPU intensive games, but otherwise could be mitigated through higher fan curve. For $1150, he believes it is an excellent deal.

It's surprising that they would go back to DDR4 Ram on this. Do you think it can be replaced with DDR5? I bought a F-15 TUF last fall for my son with a 3060 GPU and DDR5 ram. I replaced it with 32GB and added a second hard drive. FX507ZM-ES74 was the model. It also had 300Hz screen which is very nice. However his normal setup uses a 27 inch monitor connected through Thunderbolt. If I had it to do over, the 300Hz screen isn't critical of connected to an external monitor. I'm up for any recommendations for a new rig for myself. I'd like a 4070 with an intel. Have been impressed with ASUS so far, and was eyeing the Strix Scar 16 if/when it goes on sale.

Why does OP say this has a 140w 4070 - when Ebay listing clearly states 80w / 105w

Best buy listing doesn't say anything about gpu power at all.

from Ebay:
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 8GB GDDR6 with ROG Boost at 80W (105W with Dynamic Boost 2.0) for an ultrafast GPU to fuel your games.

max power doesnt matter if 80/105/140 all rtx 4070 preform as like there are multiple videos out there addressing that the 4070 doesnt gain more speed in higher wattage builds, no body know why if this is software limited or and design flaw by nivida only the 4080 benefits but the 4070 shows same results in multiple tests and wattage.Confused

No. I'm someone who drastically overresearches every substantial purchase - almost every time making a spreadsheet of some sort. I'd been looking casually at a mid-range gaming laptop for a month or so, and seriously over the last couple days. I'm also a senior software and systems engineer, so this is my wheelhouse.

He asked for downsides; I tried to come up with the biggest downsides I could. These are the worst things - other than the aforementioned screen - that I could come up with. In fact, after this I pulled the trigger. I've also snagged 2x 32GB sticks of low-latency RAM (TEAMGROUP T-Force Zeus DDR4 32GB 3200MHz CL16 [amazon.com]) and I'm really hoping I can hit 64GB on this machine.

To be honest, my experience with Windows 11 is very limited. I have one machine with it, but it's an SFF machine that I primarily picked up as a small Linux box. About half of the major Windows releases have been contentious (7->8, XP->Vista, and 98SE->Me to name a few), and while usually I've been in the 'upgrade now' camp, this time... I haven't.

To me, Windows 11 didn't bring anything impressive to the table. There's not a fundamental shift in driver architecture, which made many of the prior releases a big deal. WSL2 was made available on Windows 10, so I'm not missing out on that. Windows Subsytem for Android is cool, but Win 10 Phone Link makes it somewhat redundant. DirectStorage looks really interesting for gaming, and may be the 'fix' for modern, poorly optimized games that are written for console first, where they don't have to worry about 'double-copying' assets (SSD->system RAM->Video RAM), but very few games have implemented it so far.

Meanwhile, it took away or locked down a few things. I don't care about the taskbar on the side or top, but at initial release it was forced to the center. It seems to be much more aggressive about offering 'featured' apps in the start menu, and will nag much more when Edge is not your default browser. The Settings UI is still split between Control Panel and the Settings app, but with some things moving each update, the inconsistency is annoying. There are also fun bugs - at one point Windows telemetry bugs prevented local apps, like Notepad, from being able to open.

Some of these things I can clean up with tools like O&O ShutUp10++ [oo-software.com], and some are the growing pains of OS rewrites: you simplify the code, aim for minimum viable products, and add features back later. I'm not horribly against it, but I didn't see enough to switch in a hurry. There are people who are far more against Windows 11 than I am.
