I bought an open-box (AppleCare eligible) space-grey a couple weeks ago at $2400, and knocked 5 percent off w two Discover cards via Apple Pay, bringing the final cost to $2,280. (No tax in DE.)
The model here with the 3 years AppleCare is an awesome - albeit still expensive for a laptop - deal.
As someone still using a 2012 MacBook Pro - back when you could upgrade RAM and hard drives yourself, it was easier to save money with a base model and figure on upgrading components later if needed (which is what I did). But now, that's no longer an option. For the average joe, a laptop with these specs - M1max/64GB/2TB - will probably last a decade, assuming you'd like to keep it that long.
One caveat: a lot of states have tax-free weekends coming up, so if you're in one of those states, you might want to wait and pray for a deal at that time. Lol or there's always the M3. 🤷🏻 😂
So you have 2 discovers in applepay and did a split payment?
