The XPS is the newest line from Makita. They claim it is stronger and more resistant to corrosion.

Does this turn an impact driver into an impact wrench? Would it have enough torque to pull off lug nuts 🤔

These allow you to put sockets on your impact driver. Whether that'll break free your lug nuts is questionable. Some will on some cars, others won't.

I list tried yesterday with my Kobalt 24v volt and it was much weaker than a tire iron with moderate force.

It might work with smaller nuts but I imagine it's better for driving lag bolts and that sort of use. I used mine the other day to sink some tapcons in stucco.

I use mine on a 20v metabo impact driver. Works perfect on lug nuts and whatever else.

How does this set compare to this other similar set: Makita E-01600 Impact XPS™ 3 Pc. Square 2" Socket Adapter Set [amazon.com]? Do the blue or black bands translate to a break torque?

In for one. I figure this could be handy when working on my truck... hopefully.

Impact drivers aren't generally rated for breakaway torque like true impact wrenches are, as they prioritize high RPM drilling of screws rather than higher-torque breakaway like an impact wrench. You'll find that pretty good impact drivers get above 150 lb-ft of torque. Great ones might get above 200. There might be one or two out there that get above 300. I don't know of any putting out much higher. Meaning even at the higher end, they're putting out crappy numbers for a proper impact wrench.

For what it's worth, most lug nuts tend to be in the 80-120 lb-ft range of fastening torque, meaning decent impact drivers should be able to handle them. Whether these adapters can is a different story. I've gone through several brands of these and all seem to snap somewhere in the 80-100 lb-ft range. Meaning it's hit or miss whether they'll successfully loosen a lug nut. I have not used the specific set in this deal, but wouldn't imagine it to be significantly more durable.

All of this said, a lightweight impact driver IS a great tool for most smaller fasteners when working around a car; lug nuts are just borderline. My Dewalt impact driver with a Husky adapter (lifetime warranty!) is always by my side when I'm wrenching on my vehicles, but I generally don't use it on anything with a fastening spec greater than 80 lb-ft.

passenger cars generally tighten lug nuts to 85 to 100 foot pounds. if you can't use a 1/4" impact with an adapter to pull off lug nuts, then either your impact is trash or the lug nuts are rusted.

i took off the lug nuts on my car with a dewalt DCB850 (1/4" impact) using a 1/2" socket mounted with a sunnex adapter without a problem. they came right off.

my 1/2" impact is the DCF900 and i don't want that thing anywhere near my car

Great post. I have a set of these I bought at harbor freight. Have only used maybe 3-4 times on lug nuts so maybe 16 sets of lugs, but have worked well every time. I use them on car repairs and have been great. I'm not a mechanic though. Just occasional use.

Truthfully, I still do too. Especially when it's hot, I'm tired and almost done with the job, and the nearest breaker bar is nowhere to be found because I'm terrible at keeping my work area organized. It's never a guarantee if/when they'll snap, and the same adapter might snap on the first lug or the 50th. I've never had one snap at under 80 lb-ft, but the chance of failure does ramp up from there. The same adapter that successfully broke loose a 100 lb-ft fastener might break on a 90 lb-ft a few moments later. I've loosened fasteners up to 110 lb-ft once or twice without snapping adapters like these. But at that fastening torque, I'd say it's 50/50. At 80 lb-ft, maybe 1 in 10 or 20 chance of snapping. I'd be reasonably confident that nobody makes an adapter that'll survive a 125 lb-ft fastener, but could be wrong of course. As a general rule, if I don't see at least a tiny bit of movement in the first "burst" of clicks, I try to stop and find a breaker bar. I should add: too lazy to find the specs right now, but my impact driver is rated for 170 lb-ft or thereabouts.

I've used Husky, Dewalt, Milwaukee, Neiko, Sunex, and a couple other crappy Amazon brands, and results seem generally consistent regardless of brand. I exclusively use my Husky set now, only because of the easy lifetime warranty. I'm at Home Depot at least once every couple of months, and I've freely exchanged my set countless times because I've snapped them.
