I am assuming that this is so expensive because of the graphics card?

They cap gpu at 80w…should be at least 120 for gaming, legion laptop at 150 I believe. This is more for devs & ai/ml or creatives

That is as obvious as the sky.
Everyone knows ThinkPads are never for gaming. They're always either business or creator oriented.
Obvious they cap gpu at 80w?

Uggg... Do yourself a favor and don't buy this. I have the Gen 5 that I got for work with a GTX 3070. BIG MISTAKE. It seems that Lenovo has a hard time getting powerful video cards working with this platform as I read my overheating issues were present since the Gen 4's. I've had to send it back twice because it overheated and would not boot. I keep it on a laptop cooler but I keep having to boot it with out any USB devices connectect before it will POST. Batery life is like 30-40 minutes so I can't even travel with it as was intended. Games work OK but laptop gets too hot to touch.

For what it's aimed at, that wattage is enough.
Like I said, this is not a gaming laptop and there's no need to have higher wattage and compromise the thermals and battery life on this.

Every other creator laptop or business oriented laptop with a dedicated GPU have it gimped; Acer Swift X, Zenbooks, XPS, ASUS M16, etc, all have low powered/wattage GPUs.

thinkpad line has always more for business not gaming, 24/7/365 stability is what you paying the premium for. otherwise you are just paying premium for nothing.

that said. the 40 series GPU are much more power efficient than 30. the difference between the wattage doesn't matter nearly as much. 80W GPU + 25 W dynamic boost give you 105W when CPU isn't stressed at the same time. , even at 50W, a 4080 laptop can outperform 3080 TI at 150W.

https://en.overclocking.com/rtx-4...nsumption/

and for 50/60/70 series cards, there is a voltage limit so you will never even be able to hit wattage limit, which makes pretty much all 4050/4060/4070 perform pretty much the same regardless of wattage design.

No, it's not just about the specs.
ThinkPads are known for their durability and unique features such as the TrackPoint which can be used to move the cursor without moving your hands away from the keyboard and it will also work with gloves on. The 16:10 panels also cost more unlike the ubiquitous 16:9 panels. The extra height makes a big difference in terms of productivity. Some models also have spill-proof keyboards with a drain beneath the laptop. Of course, it's not as rugged and as water resistant as a Panasonic ToughBook, but it's way more durable than your average consumer oriented laptops. Are they as well made as old IBM made ThinkPads? No, but they were much more expensive back then and you can't find any laptops with that kind of quality these days.

The P series is classified as a workstation and is also ISV certified to work with software from AutoDesk, Adobe, etc. Surprisingly, it doesn't seem to come with ECC RAMs, but you can always swap out the RAMs later.

I'd recommend checking CPU specs first before spending money on ECC. Typically only the i9s and Xeon mobile chips have ECC support. For example, the i7-13800H in this machine is listed on intel ARK and indicated as not supporting ECC memory function.

No u can get similarly specced cheaper gaming laptops, the reason why its exp is because its a Thinkpad. While it is very powerful for its thinness and size, Thinkpads have always been expensive cause theyre built to last through a lot of abuse and come w/ Intel vPro or Ryzen Pro CPUs cause they're built for IT security as well.

Yea, gotta agree with this. I have an X1 (some chassis AFAIK) which is otherwise a great laptop, but when I'm doing anything that actually stresses the CPU/GPU the thing basically melts. When I was doing ML model training with it (upgraded to a legion, which is great) I literally put it on a cooling pad and had a fan directed to it and it would still sometimes overheat and crash.

Wish the Touchscreen models didnt have the Workstation GPU's, sometimes they tend not to perform as well as the consumer cards generally due to drivers for more general purpose tasts
