This is a great phone. Using it now. But! If you are going unlocked, it's best to pay the same for a S21-S22 flagship model from swappa or ebay.
The cpu on the A series just can't compete under load. Once you open 5+ apps at once, you start reaching the top end of this phone.
And lastly, if you ever decide to do a samsung trade-in with the A series, they offer shit in compensation. The S series holds it's value. Just some things to consider.
Understand that 'factory unlocked' and 'cell provider unlocked' are not using the same hardware. For instance, if you unlock your A54 on ATT, you can't use Verizon bands. And if you are on a mvno, it's even more hardware neutered.
Factory unlocked, as in this post, is where you want to be. Signified with a U or U1(USA) at the end of the model number.

Should be good for kids and wife. I used the A52 5G for a while (to gens before the A54) and it worked ok but I am a power user and eventually had to replace it. I assume this newer model will perform better for me now so should be enough for peeps that are not power users

FWIW, I have an A52 5G Unlocked that I got from Samsung.com. Overall I've been as happy with it as I have been with my previous S-series phones. Not only does it still have an SD slot, I recently discovered it is dual sim (you can check the phone settings/about - model name will end with "/DS"). Officially you can't use an SD card with two sims, but there is a simple hardware hack that allows you to do it. I also like the flat screen since I can use glass screen protectors. On the downside, the 5G can be a bit flaky when it switches between T-Mobile's 5G and 5G UC - I sometimes have to toggle Airplane mode on and off to get it working. And yes, there are times when the phone feels sluggish, but that can happen with all phones. Sadly they discontinued the A7x phones so 6.4" is as large as the screen gets in the A-series.

I am considering this for my mom who is still using her old Note 8. She loves her stylus pen which is a big reason why I never upgraded her. Now of course, her trade in value is blah. Even though this is not a 'flagship' phone, I trust it would be a big upgrade from a note 8 ??

These straight spec comparisons are ok but don't give the full picture.. updates, support, build quality etc...

I got one from Metro, and my experience with this phone was just awful.
1. Battery life is just miserable, only about half of any phones with Snapdragon 695 (fabricated by TSMC) + 5000mah battery. This is due to the inefficiency of Exynos 1380 fabricated by Samsung. I got about 11 hours SoT on OnePlus Nord 20, but only got 4-5 hours on this phone
2. Phone heats a lot randomly, even when you are watching Youtube videos.
3. Slow storage speed - tested lower than most of phones with UFS 2.1, I doubt if this phone is actually using 2.0 or even lower.
4. slow charging speed - a full charge takes above 2 hours given the phone heats a lot and charging speed drops during the heat

The only good part of this phone is the main camera, but it won't offsets the above troubles caused to me.

You can do this with a cheap $6-$20 stylus or a S21 and up with a samsung s pen stylus.
