Definitely! Just getting in the water will help with the fear, and having the life vest on will make you feel more comfortable. You can practice treading water and doing the crawl stroke just to become more familiar with being in water. Then take a class at your local YMCA or gym to learn how to swim.

And don't be embarrassed about not knowing how to swim. It just means you weren't raised around water. No biggie. Hawaiians probably don't know how to snow ski. It's a great life skill to have and it will probably only take a class or two. Good job on taking the first step!

You can call it an "angler vest" but it doesn't have any storage/pockets..

$170 for my PFD.. this is super cheap but if it works, it works.

I have several PFD's for different watercraft.. kayak, jet ski and normal boating.. recommend getting specifics as they can save you money but also be way more comfy. Like my kayak PFD is super well designed, very comfortable, high quality. My jet ski PFD is vastly different, it has a full back, holds my head up above the water if I get knocked out and my general boating one simply inflates if I hit water, otherwise its super low profile.

I know spending a lot on PFD's seems stupid but when you're living on a shoreline, you see the stupid shit people do and how it ends for them.. also, I have cheap Walmart PFD's for guest, they work perfectly fine so this isn't a comment to say you shouldn't get this but rather if you're new to all of this, perhaps invest in a specific vest to what you're doing.

Recommended high end brands:

Astral (great general PFD with pockets)
NRS (great pro sport fishing kayak PFD)
Onyx (great kayak general PFD)

Top overal PFD: NRS Odyssey

Its the best PFD brand IMO, has a lot of safety areas for knife, whistle, emergency texting / ping, etc but also lots of pockets. Super comfy, purely premium. Cost about $140 so not top end price but top end features.

Can I use a life vest just to float in small pools or lakes because I don't know how to float or swim?

I thought these things need to have a certified rating to be sold in the USA -- USCG Type I or USCG Type II. Am I missing it on the Dick's product page?
