For those that don't use Apple, it's $7 on Fanflix.

I have a bunch of 4k digital movies. The quality of the streams are basically 1080p Blu Ray quality. I've never watched a 4k stream and thought: "wow, 4k is amazing! It's so much better than 1080p Blu Ray!". So in other words, the sale of this 4k digital doesn't encroach on the 4k physical release, since people who are buying 4k physical actually care about 4k quality which the streams don't match. 4k physical releases are on 100gb discs. the 4k digital streams are compressing the movies to about 1/10th that size. Hence the loss in quality.

Yeah, I can agree with that. I have a buttload of 4K digital movies and I have yet to be blown away by the quality. I've never experienced physical 4K so I am basically comparing it to physical HD.

It's Apple. They want to kill off physical media. They never did support blu-ray anyway.

Since I already owned Enter the Dragon in HD, Apple upgraded it to 4K. Which means I can't purchase 4K to spread it across to other services in 4K. Oh well. When I watch it, I'll watch it on Apple.

4K Dolby Vision streams on Apple TV are 20-25mbps and this disc averages around 44mbps. So 1/10 is a bit of an exaggeration.

True. Since if they take the film out of the disc without any extras, the film is a lot smaller than the 100GB disc it's on. I know the movie "Heat" in UHD physical is about 63GB in size on disc. Extracting just the DTS-HD XLL English audio makes the movie about 56GB in size. Is Apple streaming half that size to users (28GB) per movie? I highly doubt that. That would be 50% compression. I'd imagine the stream size would be a maximum of 20GB but probably lower than that.
