Humbuckers are generally preferred for distortion. They generally have a "thicker" and "warmer" sound, and they filter out ambient 60hz hum that can make distorted tones harder to control. Single coils are "brighter" and "sharper" but also pick up that ambient 60hz hum. The two have different tonal characteristics so one isn't inherently better than the other despite the humbucker's hum canceling properties.
I can't speak for the quality of Monoprice guitars, but HSS guitars are pretty versatile. But ultimately as a total beginner with a ~$100 guitar, the pickup configuration isn't terribly important.
And Humbuckers are usually warmer, not always and can be split coil for both.
Singles came originally brighter; but the classic ones are really bright, making them tougher to go the other way(without more gear). Todays ceramic bar single pups (pickups) are highly underrated and what you usually get today. They still sound like a strat; but are balanced a bit toward typically warmer Humbuckers; and are somewhat like PAF's, being inbetween. And note: Not all soap bar looking singles are PAF (Named from the stamped-on "Patent Applied For") or that expected classic tone(between typical bright singles and warm humbuckers) from those originals.
The tones are not exactly the same with the counter designed (warming a single or brightening a coil-split humbucker) when raw and without EQ, boost or modern amp modelers(or whatever). You can make and play any type tone with either pickup. Of course they make a "noiseless single" that is actually a kinda bright humbucker (dual coils) inside and hiddden(stacked top to bottom). But I do not like the dull sound of some I have tried; YMMV. And they also make hot rails (humbuckers) that can live in a single hole; without changing it to get close to the traditional, side by side coil, humbucker warmth and slight boost. But sadly they are not quite the same. Close though. (Still cheaper to buy in the guitar you want). And it's not just the design. It is the tones, etc... from the exact model, run and each wound unit. So the looks alone might be sometimes the opposite of its design, traditionally. Try them. I prefer ceramic types, humbucker or not. For a HUMBUCKER then a traditional EVH used (not brand; but Frankie type/tone standard, from others) side by side humbucker in the bridge of a strat is potentially the best sound (before jacking it up; that for gain you'll usually do also, anyway). That is AFTER I also have a SSS (ceramics) Strat type, (or classic Tele, if preferred.)
If you are in a noisy 60 cycle hum location then humbuckers, or also using two singles buck that hum, mostly. Especially with high gain. But it's also part of the classic sound. But you want silent pauses. Especially with high gain metal(many types). No worries though. There are many ways to reduce noise.
Humbuckers are thought of for metal, from hair metal to more; but some metal is actually high gain strat like. I'm telling you it does not really matter anyway; and depending on your total gear. Find your strat by the other factors.
It's not necessary; but you can also mod your guitar. It's cheaper to buy both though.
What this is really all about is the level of control you have right on each guitar itself. Other devices work with all your guitars though.
P.S. If you want a classic unvaried Tele pickup quack, higher spanky tones (without added EQ more or gear, emulation) then a classic Tele or SSS Strat on bridge pickup does that too.[So pick the body shape, weight and personal fit you want first] When you get an HSS Strat type then you give that country twang up; except for modling and fine EQ tweaked, dialed, or programmed in similarly. And if you are destined to also own a Tele then one could let that be classic (or some other guitar shape/style with bright pickups). Because any pickups can be put on any guitar and in any positions.
So, I'm saying plan how many guitar type you plan to own (1, 2 or 3 is not excessive) and then plan which pickups you want on each.
Then there's the HSH versatility. Which for example would go well; if your other electric guitar was a classic pup Tele. Then there's acoustic and you're off to the races! LOL. Darn collector you! I'm tellin' you; Just avoid "Investment" guitars, generally. But whatever.
Practice with 1 first.
If you know better then please do tell.

Edit. 2hrs later and no confirm email. Typical for monoprice?
