Depends on which Harbor Freight meter. Almost all of the Harbor Freight meters will provide more bang for the buck as far as features go. The closest comparison is probably the AMES INSTRUMENTS DM1000 for $74.99. The DM1000 is half the price, has the ability to measure down to uA, and can measure temperature. It has a CAT IV rating whereas the 117 is rated to 600V CAT III. The Fluke 117 is easier to work with gloves on and has a 3 year warranty vs the 90 days you get from AMES. Most of what you are paying for is the Fluke reputation (branding) and warranty.

That said, most home users will be just fine with a sub $40 meter; you can always buy a more expensive model later and it doesn't hurt to have a spare.

I believe the 117C is the Chinese market version. Internals should be the same, but the manual and the writing on the back of the calculator is in Chinese. The US market 117 has a 3 year warranty.

Thanks OP, got it. I'm done being frustrated with cheap multimeters with crappy autosensing. Hopefully this one does not disappoint.

Also, can you point me to a link to the better leads that you would use?

What does this offer that the $10 ones do not? It is still made in China. I would pay extra for a non-China made one but I don't think this much more.

A few differences I notice between more expensive meters like Fluke vs cheap ones like HF is that they return and update readings noticeably faster. This is especially useful when the voltage/resistance is changing and the cheap meters just sit there recalculating. The other difference is accuracy but they're good enough for most applications.

I use the Fluke silicone test leads. Very worthwhile upgrade in my opinion, but I do use my tester a lot.
