30 lumens is plenty in the dead of night while camping. It's not linear from a visibility standpoint. Even 10 lumens is useful

Haven't tested how good the waterproofing is or if it really floats yet. But I purchased 2 of these around Christmas time for $12 each. They have been fantastic so far for the power outages and going into the shed at night.

It bugs me that so few lanterns are above 1000 lumens. The light is spread across a larger radius than flashlights so the brightness is really needed.

I guess one could use rechargeable AA's. But nowadays, 18650 cells are so common that they should have just put one or two of them in there.

Sofirn BLF LT1 if you want a serious lantern!

I'm not complaining about 30 lumens. Heck, the flashlight the Army gave me in the early 2000's probably wasn't that bright and weighed 37 pounds with the D batteries

The issue with a lantern (or any non-directional source of light) being so bright is it hampers its own usefulness. You end up with something so bright it is hard to look at yet everyone in the useful range of the light has lost any night vision. Like standing next to a car with the headlights aimed at you. No one can see squat yet everything is technically illuminated.

Also being the light is non-directional the light does not have very much 'throw.' Lanterns in my opinion are better to have a few dim lights than a single mini supernova. Unless you can place it high and bounce the light off something, for example white ceiling.

i'm looking at the other lanterns that home depot sells and several of them are 1000+ lumens, but you're going to pay more for those
