The negative pressure is because the unit includes some intake vents at the mid-level of the unit which allow air into the condenser side. This might be there as a backup intake in case the intake hose is blocked. I've taken one apart and don't see any issue with taping these intake vents closed. Then you should have zero negative pressure. However, I don't think it's a big deal, as I agree with the other poster that the negative pressure is many orders of magnitude less than single hose models.

The one downside with these units is that the inverter compressor makes a bit of a repetitive high pitched noise. You can search Youtube for examples. Midea's other inverter models also make the same noise.

In addition, I've gotten two of these refurbs from Woot and both were clearly used, with scratches and mold. Hopefully their vendor has upped their refurbishment QA.

I tried the heating and it works quite well. I believe intake air has to be above freezing for the heating to work. Further, you need to drain the condensate in heat mode.
The one I got last time Woot had these on sale came with window kit. Also comes with an adapter for a sliding window if you have one.

I have the Midea version from Costco. The unit is dual hose and yet still creates negative pressure in the room and therefore pulls in the outside air. Not impressed.
Mine doesn't do that but instead turns off by itself. I might have a defective unit I wouldn't know until 2 months of usage from now.

Did you check by closing the door during the operation? Did you seal all the other openings (especially behind the window)? Once you seal the room, you will find that during the operation, there will be an air intake draft at the door.

I have the Midea version of this AC. I paid $449 about three weeks ago when Costco had them on sale about 3 weeks ago. Costco was previously selling them for $599 but now sells them for $499 [costco.com].

I also own two different Pinguino single-hose ACs (from Costco). While there may be slight negative air pressure, it is far less than you see with a single hose variant.

Overall, the Toshiba/Midea AC is quieter, cools the room down more quickly, and overall yields a more natural room feel. I find the app to control the AC very convenient. The bundled remote can at times be buggy where the displayed state on the remote's LCD and the AC's true state (e.g., off/on) do not match. I would definitely buy this AC again.

Note I have never tried the unit in heating mode (although it is included in my model).

i don't own the unit but i am planning on getting 1 when costco has a deal again, so i did some research on the midea duo model. my guess is yes, it is more energy efficient than space heater. the portable ac is basically a heat pump, not a typical electric furnace. to cool the room, it pumps the heat outside. to warm the room, it pumps the heat in the opposite direction.

this is still just a guess based on what i read, can someone here give a confirmation?

Yes, it would be if set up correctly. It compresses gases to heat up/cool down (essentially a reverse ac) so it's more efficient than a wall heater. It needs to vent outside just like an AC, but if it's below ~40 degrees Fahrenheit outside it will periodically shut off and not work very well from my experience.

I bought one a few years ago here on woot and have been pleased with the AC function, but it didn't work well as a heat pump here in the PNW as it would drop below 40 degrees in the winter often which would make the unit shut off often to defrost the unit (aka not heat).

Does it have a pump to automatically throw out the water?
Trid using heat function in another portal ac and it fills drain pan in just hours. The drain hose is located at the bottom and emptying water out was not easy.

Far more efficient than resistance space heaters, but these Midea equivalent portable units only heat when temps are around 40 fahrenheit or above.

This is the main limitation when comparing these portable units to a legitimate full size mini split heat pump. Those are capable of heating much lower temperatures, now often below freezing effectively.

I have this unit from the same price Woot sale last year, it has a pump that you can connect a hose to for condensation draining in heat mode. The pump is strong enough to take the water upwards a few inches, i had it draining into a bucket for ease of dumping.

There are 2 drain ports, one at the bottom that isn't connected to a pump, one in the middle that has a pump.

There's a post on reddit about the P1 error code and draining: https://www.reddit.com/r/hvacadvi...rtable_ac/
A user there posted a photo of the top drain hose draining into a 1 gallon container, basically what i was doing.
There's also a series of photos on reddit of the guts of this unit, which is AKA "Midea Duo"

Mine worked great this year when my main Air Conditioning (built in the '80s) stopped working - we ran it in the living room for a few weeks during 100+ degree weather in so cal.

Assuming it has a window that it can connect to, or some outside vent, it should do pretty well.

I have mine in my living room (12x22 feet w/ an 8 foot ceiling) and it gets stupid hot in there. It will cool it from 90 down to 74 degrees in probably 15-20 minutes and keep it cool. Assuming this is the same as the Costco Midea one (which is what I bought)

I previously had a single hose LG air conditioner, 14,000 BTU also, and even wrapping the hose with insulation and it running on full blast it probably never got to that level.

I haven't turned it lower than 74 since 74-78 seems to be a sweet spot where it won't run the compressor the entire time, but I'm sure it could get cooler if I wanted.

I think a garage would work fine, assuming you can insulate it to some extent so there isn't hot air coming in or cool air getting out
