man i can't even find a battery pack with these specs at this price when building an ebike.

are there any smoother and thinner tires i can put on these? i just don't need the fat tires and they would just be a huge inefficiency.

In addition to those sizes, a step-through is also available.

I'm not sure about thinner tires, but you can definitely get ones that are designed to be used on pavement. I might end up getting those in the future. The stock tires on this bike are cheap and I don't expect them to last all that long.

I'm surprised so many of these ebikes come with fat tires.

When I was mountain biking, nobody used fat tires. They add so much rolling resistance. The only people I knew who used them, were hard-core cyclists who rode in the snow.

Are they actually desirable on ebikes? Or are they not, which is why we keep seeing them on sale?

I googled this question, and found 1,000s of click-bait articles talking about how fat tires are better. But they all acknowledge the downsides of them weighing much more, creating more resistance, and being harder to fit on a bike rack.

*edit*
I looked at the instruction manual for this bike, and it explicitly says not to ride the bike off road, or on sand.

I'm sure its just for liability reasons, but I find it pretty funny. Because that would be what the fire tires would help you with.

While a typical cyclist puts out 50-100 watts of power with their legs, this bike has 750 watts in the motor. So while these tires are highly inefficient for anything other than sand or snow, with that much power it doesn't really matter. Just push the throttle and go, actual pedaling is optional.

I would imagine for lots of newer cyclists that don't have familiarity with road or MTB bike tire sizes, the fat tires offers a sense of safety and ability to maintain stability with potholes / road debris / etc.

I'm an avid cyclist and even I, at top speed of ~30-40mph, feel a little sketchy on just MTB wheels.

That's a very interesting point. But just imagine how much more range you could get if it had normal tires on it. And how much lighter it would be if you ran out of power, or when you need to move it around. This bad boy weighs 70 LBS without the battery.

It just doesn't seem like fat tires are doing anything for you, unless you want to ride it on soft sand or snow. Which I don't think most people will do.

This bike seems to be an improvement over the Lectric IMO.

Really good price on a 52V setup, Bafang motor. I have no experience with this brand, however people seem happy.

Really a great deal at this price. If you need a 2nd battery, just order a 2nd bike.

That's interesting. A lot of the reviews I looked at on Fat Tires mention them being more difficult to maneuver. But maybe the stability at speed makes it all worth it.

They do also refer to them as "big pillows", which I'm sure some people will appreciate.

*edit* typo

If you want a folding bike, the Lectric wins. The RipCurrent is not "compact" by any means.

But the RipCurrent has a more powerful motor, bigger battery and a torque sensor. I think the 26" tires (vs. 20" on the Lectric) would ride better, but I'm not sure. The Lectric weights six pounds less but it currently costs $200 more.

Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank

I have 2 Juiced E-Bikes. One is a Ripcurrent X and the other is a Crosscurrent X. My Ripcurrent battery failed at just under 500 miles, Juiced refused to warranty. Bike was completely stock with no modifications.

I discovered the battery had heated up on its own while bike was parked in my garage (too hot to touch without gloves), I moved it outside just in case it caught fire. After it cooled down, the battery would no longer hold charge.

Could not recommend the brand any more. I've had a Hyperscorpion for 3 years (paid full price at time, around $2500), have 2000 miles, incredible reliability — literally no repairs other than fixing a flat. Motor/pack is exceptional, they were one of the first to go to 52V.

Juiced has been around for a while and their founder posts pretty interesting videos on the development of the bikes—way better than a typical D2C brand.

This is an insane price. E-bike prices are really dropping.
So you don't recommend this bike, even though you love it. Interesting...laugh out loud
