They upped it from $249 about a week ago so it may be worth waiting. Also, buy from Amazon and not Segway since you have to pay for return shipping back to Segway if you don't like it.

I would say for the $249 I bought it for, I'm happy. It rattles but whatever. The real range seems like 8-9 miles. Gets me from A to B and back again. And costs like $0.05 to charge fully. I wouldn't buy for $299 though. The newer models seem like better value.

External Battery sold separately.

This ES2 scooter goes 15mph stock, but if you add the external battery, it'll hit 19mph. This external battery off Amazon will run you about $200, but if you go to Segway's website, this battery will run you $249.

How much time does the battery last?

With the stock internal battery, you will get 15.5 mile range, but if you add that external battery, the range will become 28 miles.

In terms of how much time the battery lasts, I wanna say about 2-3 hours if you add the external battery. Or else it'll be around 1 hour with just the stock battery. But there's a lot of variables that could change that, such as your weight, the route you take (flat terrain or hilly), and the weather also, if it's too hot or cold outdoors.

How does one "explore the city" on only 15 miles?
They're not talking about suburban American hellscapes. They're talking about dense corridors with things to do.

That's enough for my commute but I wonder if it's legal to ride this on sidewalk or bike trail around here.

Ouch, change the reviews to "recent" and it's a mess. I guess QC went out the door sometime in the last year.

I bought one of these off the Newegg deal for $200 about 3 months ago. Then I added an external battery I got off eBay for $140. I'm loving it. I don't have a license so this gets me around. I've already gone about 400 miles on it. Like somebody else said it rattles a little bit in the back but for the 340 I paid I'm not complaining. You can also add custom firmware you can get off a website to make it go faster or have more torque.

I had "same" unit for 4 years now. (Segway es4 which is es2+external battery which sits next to handlebar stem). I got it for $300 which was nice price. The external battery doubles the range.

This is very early model scooter and has a number of limitations. Single battery model might be good at $200 but at $300 I'd go for $350 scooter range options.

It has a number of design flaws that might or might not be fixed.
For example if you use the light it eventually burns up the circuit inside until the scooter does not work anymore. And even if you don't want to use the light you will accidentally turn it on as it's the same button as it takes to turn scooter on.
Another issue is that older model would straight up break if you try to use electric break when the battery is full.

At the same time this unit has a number of pluses as well. The range (with external battery) is nice. I estimate about half the advertised range with hills and stuff, but 14mi is plenty (about an hour run drive). For shorter trips like 5 miles I actually prefer scooter then a car. The speed is decent, make sure to wear a helmet. Some people prefer it faster but it's fast enough for me. Charger isn't really fast, but is good enough for overnight charge.

Minuses
*It struggles with hills. With heavier people (200lb) it won't make 10* hill which is half of newer scooters.
*You need to use the app to make it go fast enough and give it an account and all phone permissions including location etc.
*Tires are stiff. Only use if the roads are perfect. Any bumps especially at speed are tough to handle.
*folding mechanism is a bit sketchy. I would not trust it to fold up and unfold every day. Because if it breaks while riding it… you are eating pavement
*screen dies in 2 years. Not a big thing if you go short range but you can't see range anymore otherwise.
*do not try to carry groceries in one hand. This ain't a bike, backpack is required.

Even though my es4 ( es2 & external battery) got me through a lot. It has its fair share of problems. I started getting error code 42 maybe 500 miles in and its been a nuisance since. Segway customer service is shiii and refused to service it even tho it was only a few months after purchase and under 1-year warranty. I'm now at 1600 miles and have a bunch of other error codes and probably get a 6-8 mile range. This scooter is rated to get 5k miles but has only survived bc I have been patient with it. Also wouldn't recommend folding and carrying it around bc back fender is fragile and will break.

You can grab open-box batteries off amazon for far less than retail. I think I got a replacement for 60 bucks.

But even so, invest in something better.
