This was my least favorite of Haruki's books that I've read.
They seem to be getting worse over time. His early short stories were some of his most profound writing. Norwegian Wood was his Catcher in the Rye, he had a few solid pieces after that but there's been a slow decline in quality over the last couple of decades.
His books are still _good_ and worth reading, the newer ones are just not quite as amazing as his earlier ones once were.

Any Murakami is excellent but if you haven't read him I'd recommend starting from A Wild Sheep Chase or Windup Bird Chronicles which are quintessential Murakami and then 1Q84.
The other two sale books for Kindle are no slouch today either - Recursion by Blake Crouch and Star Wars: Thrawn by Timothy Zahn. Also $2.99, both pretty good!

Wild Sheep Chase is another good one. Norwegian Wood is probably his most conventional novel (that I've read).
I enjoyed Commendatore, but would put most of his other books ahead of it.
