I just did this method. Bought 3 years of Xbox Live Gold from CDKeys, and redeemed them. Showed me having Gold to August 2026.
Then upgraded to GPU. Cost was $1. But my GPU is until August 2025.
Each of my CDkeys was $35.99.
So $107.97 for 3 years of Gold plus $1 = $108.97 for two years of GPU. Cost per month of GPU is $4.54. I'm quite happy.

But after you sign-up for GPU, you can still redeem XBL Gold codes. Well at least until Sept 1 since XBL Gold is being rebranded into Game Pass Core. Currently 3 month XBL Gold converts into 50 days of GPU on existing GPU subscriptions. So lower conversion rate but still not bad.
Or you can simply buy and redeem 3 month XBL Gold codes to extend your GPU sub by 50 days for each code.

For people that already have GPU, one can redeem XBL Gold codes. As I posted before, 3 months XBL Gold converts into 50 days GPU. You can see a conversion chart in this link.

As I stated before, XBL Gold is being retired and rebranded into Game Pass Core on September 1. So both methods of getting GPU cheap might disappear once that happens.
New membership:
3*12/3 = 12 cards needed to convert to 2 years
365/50 = 7 additional cards needed to get close to 3 total years
7+12 = 19 cards total needed to get ~ years of GPU
19*$7.66 = $145
Existing GPU:
365*3/50 = 21 cards to get close to 3 years of GPU
21*$7.66 = $160
..............
In any case, the math is confusing but it isn't much cheaper to let your membership lapse and re-up

My gold/game pass has completely expired (Expired a few days ago)
Buy three 12 month Xbox Live Gold Cards. Redeem them all, so I now have 3 years of Xbox Live Gold.
Then you sign up for one month of Ultimate, which for me is $14.99, and then all of my 3 years of Gold gets converted to GPU.
My total cost is the three 12 months cards (CDKey has 12 month cards for $35.99) + $14.99 and I get three years of GPU for it.
EDIT: Even if this only nets me two years of GPU, it is totally worth it because that still gets my cost of GPU down to $5/mo)
Seems like you'd have to pay for a month to make it work, but apparently, you can buy a month of GPU on eneba as well instead of paying $15 to Microsoft.

You can also check the post from yesterday here on SD to see if anyone asked the same question.
edit: someone claims the 14 day trial works, so the article I linked might be wrong. I'd definitely double check elsewhere like on reddit just in case.
