I just did this method. Bought 3 years of Xbox Live Gold from CDKeys, and redeemed them. Showed me having Gold to August 2026.
Then upgraded to GPU. Cost was $1. But my GPU is until August 2025.
Each of my CDkeys was $35.99.
So $107.97 for 3 years of Gold plus $1 = $108.97 for two years of GPU. Cost per month of GPU is $4.54. I'm quite happy.

Reading the instructions further, it seems like I can stack 3 years of Gold, then do 3:2 conversion -- so I'd end up with just 2 years of Ultimate.
