While these are reliable, dual hose units - the newer Midea Inverter based units are more efficient, quieter and move a whole lot more air.
Own both the Whynter ARC-14s in storage now as backups, as well as the 14k BTU Midea units, which have replaced the Whynters at our house.

It's hard to describe how much better the Midea units are - soft ramp up for the compressor, and running at fractional compressor capabilities to maintain room temperature - the inverter compressor control is fantastic. Additionally, the Mideas are wireless enabled - you can set schedules with the app, and control them remotely. The Wynters are just hard ON at 100% capacity or OFF - there is no middle ground with them, but they are fine units - just older, less efficient technology.
I have one of those refurbished Toshiba and haven't had a problem with the ac. The Toshiba is quieter than this one and cools down my living room pretty quickly. I don't think this is a inverter compare toToshiba which can save you money in the long run.
The Toshiba/rebranded Midea refurbished inverter one on woot that everyone is talking about is actually dual hose even though it looks like a single. It's a hose inside another much bigger hose so it's still two airstreams. So I'd believe it if the efficiency is just as good or better than this Whynter. That and the heating and wifi integration on the Toshiba work pretty nicely.

This one for $257 as a Warehouse Deal or the refurbished Toshiba 14K BTU from Woot for $349?

Naive question here but I figure this is the best group to get an honest and experienced answer.

Can these be removed from the window on a daily basis so the window can be locked when not home ? I would be placing in a very low window, like 2 feet off ground, and it seems like an invitation for someone seeking an easy entry.

Thank you in advance.

Super easy to pull out the window kit. Takes like a few seconds. If I think I'm going to use it soon I keep it sitting there right beside the window. That being said, these window sections are usually less than 6 inches, so if you have a slider you can place a piece of wood in the window channel so people an only open it 6 inches or less.

The Toshiba is a rebranded Midea fyi. Also didn't it include heat? Loved mine but got one of the Midea U shaped window units and sold the Toshiba instead.

inverter is incredible
Or Midea is a rebranded Toshiba!!?? 😆 Yeah, they probably have the same components inside. They just slap on their name. I wish I had windows made for the u shaped window unit. My friend has one and she says she loves it.

Fair enough hahaha. The Midea app worked for it, but I didn't try the Toshiba app on my Midea yet!

Have one of these in South Florida, buying a 2nd at this price. Dual hose but manual says the intake is optional. I run dual. On super humid days on ac mode doesn't need any draining, expels the water with the hot air (I'm told if you use only as dehumidifier you'll need to drain). Whynter seems like popular brand down here. Sooner or later central AC goes out, great to have as backups.

I have one of these. I've had it for maybe 6 years now. Working great. The only thing I had to replace was the hose that had deteriorated.

Holy Smokes what a deal. I paid $500 "regular price" 4 years ago. I recently wanted another one and it was $650 "regular price" and paid $5K instead for whole home air conditioning instead.

I would buy 2-3 at this price easily.

I have both of them. Both of them although being dual hose create negative pressure in the room. You can feel the draft of air coming in from door 0.5 inch open.
Disappointed in both of them. In order to notice this effect, you will need to seal the window properly.
I can't understand why the condenser fan section can't be sealed properly so that there is no negative pressure.

Is there a comparable unit with wifi? Need to be able to turn this unit on/off remotely via app.

I've owned and used one of these, exact same model, for three summers and it became much much less effective second summer, it ices up more often as well which is an indicator it lost some refrigerant. I could not recommend it at all. I bought it on good ratings but it doesn't do well long term.

The drain plug is at the very bottom which is super annoying to empty (often), you have to have the unit on a stand or lift it up.

This seems to be a good price. I paid $555 for this 6 years ago from Best Buy and it's still running strong. It's always been a pretty loud unit though so keep that in mind if you're putting it in a bedroom or office where you typically want peace and quiet.
