While these are reliable, dual hose units - the newer Midea Inverter based units are more efficient, quieter and move a whole lot more air.
Own both the Whynter ARC-14s in storage now as backups, as well as the 14k BTU Midea units, which have replaced the Whynters at our house.

It's hard to describe how much better the Midea units are - soft ramp up for the compressor, and running at fractional compressor capabilities to maintain room temperature - the inverter compressor control is fantastic. Additionally, the Mideas are wireless enabled - you can set schedules with the app, and control them remotely. The Wynters are just hard ON at 100% capacity or OFF - there is no middle ground with them, but they are fine units - just older, less efficient technology.
I have one of those refurbished Toshiba and haven't had a problem with the ac. The Toshiba is quieter than this one and cools down my living room pretty quickly. I don't think this is a inverter compare toToshiba which can save you money in the long run.
The Toshiba/rebranded Midea refurbished inverter one on woot that everyone is talking about is actually dual hose even though it looks like a single. It's a hose inside another much bigger hose so it's still two airstreams. So I'd believe it if the efficiency is just as good or better than this Whynter. That and the heating and wifi integration on the Toshiba work pretty nicely.

I see multiple mentions of the Midea unit, but when I look at their website the review average is around 3 stars--but I'm not seeing the negative reviews.

Is there a comparable unit with wifi? Need to be able to turn this unit on/off remotely via app.
Get an Amazon plug. That's how I turn mine on and off. They are $25 now, but you can get them super cheap on sale days.

Are we past the hottest days of the summer yet? I keep thinking maybe I can just tough it out another year without buying an ac.

My Whynter just died a few months back. I was undecided about getting another one or going with a window unit. These units will never cool as well a window unit, but I'm a little uncomfortable putting a window unit in because they look so bad. So I made a couple of changes. I ended up putting this reflective SmartShield insulation over the windows upstairs and it made a noticeable difference cooling my upstairs down. Still not as cool as downstairs but trust me from someone who has ran a portable AC for years and years 24/7 it's not that bad and plus the amount of electricity I'm saving is huge.

Same boat. I have both and using them right now. Tend to agree with you. Midea seems far more efficient but both are good at cooling. I do like the smart features for Midea. I can turn my A/C on before I come home and my bedroom will be nice a cool.

i have one of these, it works great for small spaces like a 800sq ft space with 9 ft ceilings. In a residential, this trips up my power breaker all the time, so be prepared to have an extention cord from a different outlet that isn't on the same system as where you might need it.

I just got a one hose portable unit from Best Buy (Insignia) for about $100 less. It works very well and I live in a VERY humid area. I have a dehumidifier with no output air hose, so it just blows that hot air inside. I am tempted to get this and return the Insignia one, but my AC was just replaced 2 years ago and this should really only be back up. I don't know if the extra $100 and returning my current one is the best option.
I have a couple of the 1-hose units, they suck... lol, literally. So there's a negative pressure caused by the fact that it's exhausting hot air, so it's pulling warm air in through the cracks under my door or from my attic. It gets really hot in my hallway in the daytime.
If I could return one of mine for this I'd probably do it.

Is there a Summyer edition by Whynter that includes Heat?
Yes, they do have a rebrand of the Midea 4-in-1 14k BTU that everyone is talking about. I have one running behind me right now.

He/she probably refering to the midea u shaped window ac. It's not portable ac like this one. People who get portable ac often times couldn't install a window ac. But if you can, get any window ac, it is miles more efficient than any portable ac.

if you have windows that slide left and right (not up/down like traditional windows) - can you use a window ac?

There are AC built for sliding windows but the size is a hit or miss base on the window. You might still be able to use the traditional window ac by removing the windows and do a custom/creative fitting. I removed my sliding windows and installed a midea u shaped ac there. Do some measurements and see if your window frame will fit.
