While these are reliable, dual hose units - the newer Midea Inverter based units are more efficient, quieter and move a whole lot more air.
Own both the Whynter ARC-14s in storage now as backups, as well as the 14k BTU Midea units, which have replaced the Whynters at our house.

It's hard to describe how much better the Midea units are - soft ramp up for the compressor, and running at fractional compressor capabilities to maintain room temperature - the inverter compressor control is fantastic. Additionally, the Mideas are wireless enabled - you can set schedules with the app, and control them remotely. The Wynters are just hard ON at 100% capacity or OFF - there is no middle ground with them, but they are fine units - just older, less efficient technology.
I have one of those refurbished Toshiba and haven't had a problem with the ac. The Toshiba is quieter than this one and cools down my living room pretty quickly. I don't think this is a inverter compare toToshiba which can save you money in the long run.
The Toshiba/rebranded Midea refurbished inverter one on woot that everyone is talking about is actually dual hose even though it looks like a single. It's a hose inside another much bigger hose so it's still two airstreams. So I'd believe it if the efficiency is just as good or better than this Whynter. That and the heating and wifi integration on the Toshiba work pretty nicely.

I have the Toshiba heat-pump 14kbtu and this. This cools way better - not even close.
The heat on the Toshiba is nice but you can get a much more effective space heater/
It will cost nearly triple to use a space heater compared to the heat pump.

I suspect something is wrong with your unit if it does not cool the same as this one though. The ratings are not arbitrary and the Whynter unit has a much lower seasonal adjusted cooling capacity. The Toshiba/Midea unit is a higher quality unit, the inverter based compressor puts it in another class.

For what it is worth I have the Toshiba/Midea inverter unit in the garage and it has been used as a backup for this Texas weather as well; way better than a typical loud on/off portable AC if it is going to be used indoors. Picked up my Toshiba refurbished (could not discern from new) for $300, and would not consider this Whynter unit as a replacement.

I bought this unit 5 years ago at Costco and it's been reliable. It has a drain valve but water almost never comes out of it which is nice while having it indoors. The unit works well most of the time but the earlier in the day you turn it on the better results you'll have.

This is a great deal. Have used mine for 3 years in a 1000 sq ft living room/dining/kitchen area and it cools down the hot PNW summers very quick. I'd recommend making your own window insert out of wood to allow you to put allow more space in between the two hoses. One pushes hot air out while the other pulls air in, so you want to keep the hot air one on top and ideally a few feet apart. It also helps to wrap the hot hose with insulation wrap. There are tons of posts on Reddit and Home Depot to DIY

I purchased the Midea Duo Inverter from Costco. Whenever the compressor turns on, it produces a high pitched noise that immediately wakes people up. Because it cannot be used at night, it's going to get returned.

Which midea do you recommend can you send link?
Be careful if you plan to use the Midea unit when sleeping. I'm going to have to return mine due to the high pitch sound when the inverter turns on.

Is there a comparable unit with wifi? Need to be able to turn this unit on/off remotely via app.
if you want something fancy, i got a Sensibo that is basically a wifi thermostat for portable AC.

I've had one for about 10 years. Used it for a room ac, storage, let grandma borrow it, storage, let cousin borrow it, storage, then used as a backup when main ac had a problem in the summer. I have not been able to kill it yet. I think I paid around 420 dollars for it way back when. I modded my window plate and glued metal screen material over the opening to keep out bugs. The window I used had no screen
Pros: easy install and removal. Has been very reliable. Dual hose unit is what you want if you get a unit with hoses.
Cons: no heat. Hard to completely disable to clean coils if you try to tackle that. Most people won't. I'd go a different route now and just spray foamer into coil and let it drip through with no disassembly.

Most newer units have both cooling and heating. I think the new inverter units are probably the way to go.

If you only need cooling, you can't beat this price

This Whynter is also super loud everytime the compressor turns on, I try to make my room super cold right before sleeping and just turn it off for the night. Unless it's disgustingly hot then I'll just deal with being woken up a few times. I think most powerful portable ac units are loud, the only ones I've had that were relatively quiet when the compressor turned on were significantly weaker single hose units (Sharp, Windchaser).

Amazon should really bring back price matching. Loses them alot of money for me to return the one I ordered a few weeks back and then order this one to get the price difference. Would be alot cheaper for them to just refund me the difference and let me keep the one I have.

So much for global warming being fake news. Hopefully more people will take it seriously now that it was recently 100+ degrees in Washington State, which just never happened until recently.
