While these are reliable, dual hose units - the newer Midea Inverter based units are more efficient, quieter and move a whole lot more air.
Own both the Whynter ARC-14s in storage now as backups, as well as the 14k BTU Midea units, which have replaced the Whynters at our house.

It's hard to describe how much better the Midea units are - soft ramp up for the compressor, and running at fractional compressor capabilities to maintain room temperature - the inverter compressor control is fantastic. Additionally, the Mideas are wireless enabled - you can set schedules with the app, and control them remotely. The Wynters are just hard ON at 100% capacity or OFF - there is no middle ground with them, but they are fine units - just older, less efficient technology.
I have one of those refurbished Toshiba and haven't had a problem with the ac. The Toshiba is quieter than this one and cools down my living room pretty quickly. I don't think this is a inverter compare toToshiba which can save you money in the long run.
The Toshiba/rebranded Midea refurbished inverter one on woot that everyone is talking about is actually dual hose even though it looks like a single. It's a hose inside another much bigger hose so it's still two airstreams. So I'd believe it if the efficiency is just as good or better than this Whynter. That and the heating and wifi integration on the Toshiba work pretty nicely.

But if your outside air is slightly cooler than your inside air then having the intake inside the house would make the hot inside air be replaced by negative pressure (cooler) outside air. Maybe extend the intake toward the hot ceiling air And I am not referring to a huge difference in inside/outside temperature where "just open the windows" is the answer.
Why would you be running the air conditioner if it's cooler outside?

The issue with single hose units is that when it's 100 degrees outside, that unit will create a vacuum and suck the 100 degree air INTO the house through all the penetrations in the buildings: vents, ducts, doggy doors, electrical outlet, can lights, window gaps, etc.

bro if it's cooler outside than it is inside, you can make do with just a fan pointed at your window, you don't need an AC unit at all

I have been using this unit in my garage since 2018. I work out of my oversized 2 car garage and it's running just about 8 hours a day approx 300 days a year. The on / off button has about worn out so I pretty much only use the remote, but the unit is still gong strong. I did grab one today at $298 for a backup. It's not quiet by any means but it keeps it cool enough that I have not gone to a mini split. I cut two holes in the side of my house to vent (with wire mesh angled dryer type vent caps on the outside) even though I have windows in the garage, because the window venting just doesn't work to my liking. This is a great price.

I've had a very different experience with this unit than others. Mine died after 6 months of use. The warranty requires me to ship the unit back via freight at my cost. 100lb unit. Disappointing for sure.

the exhaust tube is short because it's hot and not insulated well, heating up the room and reducing efficiency. not using the intake tube is also inefficient because then you get a negative air pressure in your house that pulls in outside air.

According to that logic, wouldn't it be an even greater improvement to throw open every window in the house, while you're using your portable A/C? (given: air is cooler outside than inside)

I like your idea even better! That way when I keep the intake hose inside the house it would help to draw in more cooler outside air via the windows (as long as humidity was not a problem) and cool the entire house, while at the same time getting my bedroom cold where the A/C is. Particularly if the bedroom is on the hot second floor and you open a window on the cooler first floor. Just as long as I can extend the intake hose outside of the room that I am trying to cool so I am not venting out my just-cooled air.

This Whynter is also super loud everytime the compressor turns on, I try to make my room super cold right before sleeping and just turn it off for the night. Unless it's disgustingly hot then I'll just deal with being woken up a few times. I think most powerful portable ac units are loud, the only ones I've had that were relatively quiet when the compressor turned on were significantly weaker single hose units (Sharp, Windchaser).
I have used it for so long I can't sleep without the noise. But yes if you are sensitive to noises this unit can be a bit loud at first (especially when the compressor hits) but I definitely got used to it quickly.

House warms up to 75 during daytime heating. Outside temp goes down to 70 overnight. I need it to be lower-mid 60's to sleep. Outside temperature is cooler than than inside the house, but does not equate to the temperature I need the bedroom to be. Hence I run the A/C.

A couple of nights ago it got down to 60 at night (actually around 6am) but I still ran the A/C due to the humidity getting up over 90%, cant sleep in that either.

Thanks for your insight, we all appreciate your wit. I used this in a closed office at work with only a drop ceiling 10 ft up where the central AC units stopped working over a hot summer. This worked for my purpose just fine for a 15x15 office when I shut the office door. I did not care about a minor inefficiency of having a partial negative air pressure. It cooled my office about 10+ degrees perfectly and it still works today.
I have ran this one hosed as well and it worked fine. It isn't ideal but it gets the job done.

Cooler does not mean a temperature that is sleepable. When I say cooler I was referring to the outside temp being cooler than inside the house - but it is still not cool enough for me to sleep so I need to run the A/C.

Wondering if this could save me money...
I don't mind the heat, but when I don't turn on the AC the family starts moaning. I figure get this, put them (family and this unit) in one of the rooms without the vaulted ceiling, and hopefully electric bill plumits?

Me too but I went ahead and got this one for my media room that sits over garage. I know the other is better when new, but there are too many comments about damage on refurbs for $50 more. I only plan to use this a few hours a week...

I wish I had an Ice Queen. I am an Ice King and my queen seems to think leaving the thermostat at 79 during the texas summer is good enough
