Why are you comparing a $3200 battery setup to a $200 generator and $5 of gas?
I got the 3200w dual fuel inverter for $280 last month. Worth every penny!
If this gets you through one hurricane Sandy then caputs it worth the $200

How loud is this 1600w? Read on the other thread that it's super loud?

I live next to a miserable petty old man and would prefer a quiet model

IF it is built the same as this one, just be sure not to put it on bare dirt or sand and know it can destroy itself by sucking up dirt and sand because of bad design.

Fairly loud at high speed. Idling along not too bad.

DB test is at 10:07

If you really must have quiet in this size for a decent price try to find a used honda.

I think it's probably the same and they should have designed wider area intake so it doesn't act like vacuum nose attachment if they wanted to get air from the bottom but it's also best to place them on solid clean surfaces as well to avoid the issue. Throwing it into the sand is probably not a good idea regardless of design.

Wow, that's a horrible design! But be sure to oil those foam filters. 90% of these China gens do not have oil on the foam filters, and those filters without oil are equivalent to no filter at all. Second, if you want, you can SPLURGE on an NGK spark plug after the break-in period. Hey when the plug costs 3% of the generator, it's a splurge right?

Yikes, that's a terrible design. Does anyone think the intake can be redirected without impacting the performance too much?

Edit: I'm thinking the best solution is to install a flat board on the base, so no matter what you put it on it won't suck up what's underneath it.

I'm pretty sure you could just plug the holes that draw air from below and just drill holes in the top of the filter housing cover to draw air from the top instead and that would change everything, just try to keep the intake area roughly the same size opening as it was before..
That alone would move the intake area up about 4" off the ground.

But really just knowing it's weakness means you can just know better than to put it where it acts as a vacuum sucking up everything. If you are the only one using it then you'll know better than to use it wrong.

Then again 4" off the ground is still only 4" off the ground, it's still just going to suck up any dust the wind or vibration kicks up that is 4" off the ground, it would just be less of a focused floor vacuum design..

Same brand as OP, it's the next size up. It was a refurb but works perfectly. Sold directly from firman's ebay account. Currently listed for $650 so you can't get it for that price now.
