It has been at this price for a year. Is it a slick deal?

You are not alone. The same royal basmati from Walmart tastes and smell way way better than from Amazon.

This is fake news. India banned export of the popular "Sona Masoori" variety only. Basmati was never banned.

I am eating basmati rice for more than 40 years, and this does not smell or taste like real basmati rice, may I be getting old, or this rice is not really basmati rice? BTW, not sure if you get 1lb/$1 USD real and authentic basmati rice in US....not sure. Do your own DD Wink

Try aging it. Maybe you got fresh stock. Rice is better a little aged.

Not sure why this rice always gets so much crap on SD. I have been eating it for many years and I have always thought it was fine. I have tried other brands that some consider fancy like Tilda and Dawaat and I would take Royal over them.

If you prefer the rice that is not sticky, more fluffy than jasmine rice, more tasty than regular long grain, it's worth a try. Great for stir fry rice. But if you prefer something like sushi rice, then this is very different.
I personally each both sushi rice, jasmine and also basmati regularly. All has its distinct characteristics. But I don't like brown rice.
And btw, If you have diabetes, basmati rice is a good option among white rice varieties.

I agree. I usually buy the 20lb bag from walmart (direct, no 3rd party sellers) / sams and have had no taste / consistency issues but decided to try the one a buddy purchased from amazon and something was just off about it. Not sure what the difference is between vendors.

I can believe it. I just bought at my local store a product labeled as basmati that appears and behaves in exactly the same way as normal enriched long-grain/jasmine. The only difference was the price. I think rice might be seeing the same kinds of aithenticity issues that olive oil has had for a while now.

I'm the same with regards to Jasmine and basmati, love them both, and I too dislike brown rice.

I would definitely try this brand if purchased locally but I just can't bring myself to buy things for consumption from Amazon any longer if it's not in a can; I've had too many fake products from there over the years.

Do you normally buy this brand on Amazon or do you buy it locally?
Just curious because that seems to be the difference in the reviews: Amazon seems to have a lot of "this doesn't taste right" reviews

I was just yelled at yesterday about all the rice I have in the basement.

In for one.

We switched from the other Royal "Chefs Secret" long grain to this regular, "lower" Royal Rice. The cooked regular rice lost their appeal in the appearnce: they looked like mashed potatoes no matter what we tried differently. Although these tasted the same as the Royal Chef's Secret, these were less aromatic. I decided that I will not go cheap on what I eat.
